Scores die as Syrian forces attack defiant cities

BEIRUT (AP) — Syr­ian secu­rity forces backed by tanks and snipers launched a fero­cious assault Sun­day on defi­ant cities and towns, killing at least 70 peo­ple and pos­si­bly many more as the regime raced to crush dis­sent ahead of Ramadan. Corpses lit­tered the streets after a surge in vio­lence that drew wide­spread inter­na­tional condemnation.

It’s a deal: Obama, Congress will avert default

WASHINGTON (AP) — End­ing a per­ilous stale­mate, Pres­i­dent Barack Obama and con­gres­sional lead­ers announced agree­ment Sun­day night on an emer­gency deal to avoid to avert the nation’s first-ever finan­cial default. The arrange­ment would cut more than $2 tril­lion from fed­eral spend­ing over a decade.

Delaware gears up for 31st triathlon

Dave Sta­ley said he had never com­peted in a triathlon until he helped orga­nize Delaware’s first. Since then, both Sta­ley and the event seem unstoppable.

Kath­leen M. Zeug, 84, of San­ford, Maine, passed away late Sat­ur­day evening (July 30, 2011) at River­side Hos­pi­tal. Rod­man Neeper Funeral Home has been called upon to assist the fam­ily with return­ing Kath­leen to Maine for funeral services.
