Maj. James P. Bishop

Maj. James P. Bishop, 95, born on Jan. 18, 1916, died Thurs­day (June 30, 2011).

After serv­ing in WWII, he spent 28 years with the Indi­ana State Board of Health as a pub­lic health san­i­tar­ian. He served a total of 30 years in the mil­i­tary and retired from the Army Reserve. He grad­u­ated high school from the Oneida Bap­tist Insti­tute and col­lege from the Uni­ver­sity of Louisville. He was a 50-year mem­ber of the Masonic Lodge in Oneida, Ky. He was a life mem­ber of the VFW and the Indi­ana Asso­ci­a­tion of San­i­tar­i­ans, hold­ing the title of San­i­tar­ian Emer­i­tus. He was a kind, gen­er­ous and brave man who served our coun­try well in WWII, includ­ing the Bat­tle of the Bulge. Dur­ing crit­i­cal times in WWII, he com­manded the unit guard­ing Gen­eral Omar Bradley’s head­quar­ters. He was with the 526th Armored Infantry Battalion.

He is sur­vived by his sis­ter, Mil­dred (Bishop) Byrd; his brother, Steve; three sons, Bob (Mila), Ron (Dala), and Ger­ald (Imelda); and grand­chil­dren Jeremy, Brett, Bryce, Blair, Daniel, David and Gregory.

He was pre­ceded in death by his wife, Elsie (Kaelin); a son, Charles;, five broth­ers; and two sisters.

Vis­i­ta­tion is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Foun­tain Square Mor­tu­ary at 1420 E. Prospect St, Indi­anapo­lis, IN 46203. A Com­mit­tal Ser­vice will be held at 1:30 p.m. at the Crown Hill Ceme­tery Peace Chapel.
