Ladies, if Mark can not afford another levy then let it be. You are just going to upset him enough that he rails the levy every chance he gets. He has that right. Also, Delaware down the drain? Give me a break. The school district is not what is attracting businesses to Delaware and in case you have not noticed, home building in Delaware versus 10 years ago is almost zilch. I can tell you now that our schools are in much better shape than 10 years ago. So better schools = better housing does not exist in this city. I wish that I could go to the taxpayers if I need to make a deficit in my business.
They always want to cut the things that hurt constituents the most, not the things that should be cut.…like administration. Where we lived before, there was one administration for the whole county, and it was a very effective school district. How many school districts are there in this county? Hmmm.…let me think.…four. Feeding the schools with levy renewals is like feeding the bears…and they just keep coming back for more.
For the record, Delaware City Schools have cut administration. Where the average in ohio is 1 administrator per 150 students, Delaware has 1 administrator per 250 students. Feel free to visit http://www.DelawareSchoolLevy.com to get the facts about what is being asked of the taxpayers.
I understand your support of this levy and I’m really not trying to fight. I’m frustrated with the way this economy is. Maybe an extra $600 more in taxes a year is not a lot to you, but it is enormous to me. I did have kids in the district so I understand you wanting the best for your kids. I just don’t know where the extra money is going to come from because I’ve made all the budget cuts in my own household that I possibly can. We are down to the bare necessities and simply can’t afford one more thing. I’m sorry if I offended anyone, I’m just at the end of my rope.
I apologize for coming across harshly toward you, Mark. Because my kids attend Delaware City, I am very passionate about the levy passing. And, I honestly don’t believe that our taxes are any higher than our neighboring communities. I can sympathize on youw with the finding the money. We’ve had to cut quite a bit here as well. We’ve started living on a bare bones budget and are cutting where we can. This recession sucks. However, for my children, I will do what it takes. We all claim that education is important, but our Governor doesn’t seem to follow that line of thinking, so it’s left to the rest of us to make up for his shortcomings. It’s a sad fact that we have to live with. And, I’m determined to do what I can to make sure my children and the rest of the children in this district don’t suffer for his shortsightedness.
If you recently received your home’s revised home value assessment, you know that the value of your home has dropped…some homes dropped up to 20%! A school system without busing, minimal extracurricular activities and a high teacher-to-student ratio means that your home’s value will go down even more.
So, the pennies that you save on your taxes by voting against this levy will just cost you dollars on your home value.
Please vote FOR the levy.
Well Said, Kate. Mark, do you know anything about THIS levy? Or, do you just have a knee-jerk reaction against all levies? Do you have kids in Delaware City Schools? Paul Craft and his team have done a wonderful job ‘trimming the fat’ in the Delaware City SD budget. What’s left to cut isn’t just a few “extra-curriculars’. It’s ALL extra– and co-curriculars. It’s bus service. It’s teachers. Would you want your kids in a class with 40 other kids? I don’t. Delaware city has an incredible music program, but that will be gone if the levy fails.
Also, it’s more than just the kids. Our property values will plummet if this levy fails. Who’s going to want to move into a school district that doesn’t have community support? What companies are going to want to move here? Delaware is a wonderful “little” city and I want to keep it that way. That’s why I am voting for the levy and I encourage every one to do the same.
I’m sick of the scare tactics that the schools and supporters use to frighten you into voting for the levy. I HIGHLY doubt that we’ll swirl down any drain because a school levy doesn’t pass. Maybe more people will want to move to Delaware if the property taxes weren’t so darned high. As for new businesses, they usually get a tax cut anyways so why would they care?
Delaware property taxes are high? Compared to who, Olentangy? Ashley? Worthington? Please, enlighten us.
And, you’d better believe I’m scared. I have children who attend Delaware City schools and I care very much about their education.
Personally, I’m sick of people who want things, but don’t want to pay for them.
sure as long as they will take IOUs because that’s all we have left.and Kate everything your worried about happening has all ready happened where have you been for the last 4 years .welcome to the great re-screwing of America.
NO NO NO. I can’t afford another levy!! I’ve tightened my belt as far as it will go. Am I supposed to go on welfare in order to pay my higher property taxes because of the constant levies??? The schools need to tighten their belts also. Can’t offer extra curricular activities anymore? TOO BAD…my extra curriculars had to be cut out too.…going to the movies, out to dinner, etc no longer exist in my household. Can’t offer the foreign language programs anymore? Oh well. Highly doubt the majority of the kids will be visiting those countries anyway. Frustrated and sickened by yet another levy.
Then don’t be surprised when Delaware starts swirling down the drain if the levy doesn’t pass. The schools can’t cut any more. Watch the property stop selling and new businesses not coming to Delaware. And watch your property value plummet. Be very careful how you vote. It might not be as you thought!!!
