It’s that time of year again — household hazardous waste day is this Saturday. Time to gather up all that waste gathering dust on your storage shelves and get rid of it responsibly. I would like to propose a plan for you and your neighbors. If you all join together and collect the accepted waste then you can share the suggested donation cost and take one car or truck to the site.

Here are the details: The event is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Delaware County Fairgrounds; a Hazardous Waste Drop-off is being sponsored by the Delaware General Health District and it’s Keep Delaware County Beautiful Campaign. (The program is funded by the DKMM Solid Waste District). Please use the U.S. 23 entrance between the EMS Station and The Warehouse Italian Restaurant.

This is what you want to gather up from your basement, your garage or shed and your neighbors: acids and caustics, ammunition (max. 50 cal.), pool chemicals, batteries, fertilizers, automotive fluids, poisons, computers and components, propane cylinders (max. 20 lb.), thinners, weed and insect killers, kerosene and fuels, cell phones and scrap tires (17 rim or less, limit 10).

Don’t gather these articles: paint, televisions or appliances. Also, no containers larger than five gallons will be accepted with a maximum number of six five-gallon containers per vehicle. Remember, this collection day is for individuals only — no businesses, schools or churches.

The suggested donation is $5 per car or pickup and $10 per large truck or pickup with a trailer. There is also a $1 fee per car tire, $4 per truck tire and $25 per farm tractor tire.

You still have time to do some fall cleaning and get with your friends and relatives to haul in a bunch of hazardous waste where it will be correctly disposed of or recycled. Questions? Call Keep Delaware County Beautiful at 740-368-1700, ext. 2076.
