Louis E. “Lou” Erwin, 81, of Richwood died Sunday (Oct. 16, 2011) at the OSU Hospital East in Columbus.

He was born July 10, 1930 in Westerville to the late Chester “Sam” Erwin and Pauline (Carothers) Vance. On June 21, 1951 he married the former Joyce R. Hamilton at the former Central United Methodist Church in Richwood, and she died Sept. 11, 2010.

He was a very active and dedicated member of the former Central United Methodist Church where he had served in virtually all capacities. More recently he had attended the Fulton Creek Friends Church. He was a former volunteer fireman with the Richwood Fire Department and a member of Richwood VFW Post 870. A recipient of the Purple Heart, Louis was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, serving during the Korean Conflict. After serving his country, he became a tractor mechanic and then an engineer for Whirlpool Corporation, where he worked for more than 30 years. Following retirement from Whirlpool, he worked as a die polisher at Luvata in Delaware for 10 years.

He is survived by four daughters, Deborah (James) Grindell of Dallas, Phyllis Murray of Richwood, Christine (Spencer) Schalip of Marysville and Cathy Beatty of Columbus; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and special friend and companion, Maxie, his dog.

Besides his wife, he was also preceded in death by three brothers, Chester, Joe and Jack Erwin.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 21, in the Stofcheck-Ballinger Funeral Home, Richwood, with the Rev. Ken Kirk officiating. Burial will follow in Claibourne Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by the Richwood Area Veterans. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home in Richwood.
