Louis E. “Lou” Erwin

Louis E. “Lou” Erwin, 81, of Rich­wood died Sun­day (Oct. 16, 2011) at the OSU Hos­pi­tal East in Columbus.

He was born July 10, 1930 in West­er­ville to the late Chester “Sam” Erwin and Pauline (Carothers) Vance. On June 21, 1951 he mar­ried the for­mer Joyce R. Hamil­ton at the for­mer Cen­tral United Methodist Church in Rich­wood, and she died Sept. 11, 2010.

He was a very active and ded­i­cated mem­ber of the for­mer Cen­tral United Methodist Church where he had served in vir­tu­ally all capac­i­ties. More recently he had attended the Ful­ton Creek Friends Church. He was a for­mer vol­un­teer fire­man with the Rich­wood Fire Depart­ment and a mem­ber of Rich­wood VFW Post 870. A recip­i­ent of the Pur­ple Heart, Louis was a vet­eran of the United States Marine Corps, serv­ing dur­ing the Korean Con­flict. After serv­ing his coun­try, he became a trac­tor mechanic and then an engi­neer for Whirlpool Cor­po­ra­tion, where he worked for more than 30 years. Fol­low­ing retire­ment from Whirlpool, he worked as a die pol­isher at Luvata in Delaware for 10 years.

He is sur­vived by four daugh­ters, Deb­o­rah (James) Grindell of Dal­las, Phyl­lis Mur­ray of Rich­wood, Chris­tine (Spencer) Schalip of Marysville and Cathy Beatty of Colum­bus; six grand­chil­dren; four great-grandchildren; and spe­cial friend and com­pan­ion, Maxie, his dog.

Besides his wife, he was also pre­ceded in death by three broth­ers, Chester, Joe and Jack Erwin.

Funeral ser­vices will be at 11 a.m. Fri­day, Oct. 21, in the Stofcheck-Ballinger Funeral Home, Rich­wood, with the Rev. Ken Kirk offi­ci­at­ing. Bur­ial will fol­low in Clai­bourne Ceme­tery where mil­i­tary hon­ors will be con­ducted by the Rich­wood Area Vet­er­ans. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thurs­day at the funeral home in Richwood.

To help com­bat the dis­ease that claimed his beloved wife, Joyce, memo­r­ial gifts may be made to the Alzheimer’s Asso­ci­a­tion, Cen­tral Ohio Chap­ter, 1379 Dublin Road, Colum­bus, OH 43215.
