Major Joseph E. Walker

Major Joseph E. Walker (ret), 78, of West­er­ville, passed away at home on Thurs­day (Oct. 6, 2011) after being sur­rounded by his lov­ing fam­ily for the last seven months.

Joe was born at home on his parent’s farm in Sun­bury. He was a grad­u­ate of Big Wal­nut High School, Otter­bein Col­lege and the Uni­ver­sity of Illi­nois. Retired Major, he earned his pilot wings and spent 21 years fly­ing in the Air Force includ­ing a tour in Viet­nam risk­ing his life to pro­vide needed sup­plies to remote or sur­rounded troops. After retir­ing in 1976 he became involved in Real Estate and opened Cen­tury 21 Joe Walker and Asso­ciates which he owned with his wife Char­ity for 31 years. Joe was a very car­ing and giv­ing man. He pro­vided finan­cial and emo­tional sup­port to many friends, fam­ily and col­leagues. For many years he was the Santa Claus for Amer­i­can Can­cer Soci­ety fam­i­lies, pro­vid­ing gifts and food along with being a major con­trib­u­tor to Easter Seals.

He will be sadly missed by his wife of 57 years, Char­ity; chil­dren, Brent, Valerie (John ) Mar­burger, Scott (Yvetta), and Mark (Kim); five grand­chil­dren, Teniele (Steve) Cochern, Tri­cia (Colin) Fos­ter, Jes­sica (Jacob) Day, Erica (Lou) Walker and Zachary Walker; and six great-grandchildren, Grif­fin, Tea­gan, Avery, Daine, Maclan and Finley.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Mon­day at Hill Funeral Home, 220 S. State St., West­er­ville. Funeral Ser­vice will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tues­day at The Church of the Mas­ter, U.M., 24 N. Grove St., West­er­ville, with the Rev. David Hogg offi­ci­at­ing. Inter­ment will be in Sun­bury Memo­r­ial Park.
