Marion Allan ‘Jack’ Viers

Marion Allan “Jack” Viers, 88, of Delaware passed away early Friday morning (Oct. 14, 2011) and during fall harvest at Arbors of Delaware following an extended illness.

He was born on May 10, 1923 to the late Elza and Clara (Davis) Viers of Lewis Center. Jack graduated from Orange High School in 1940 and except for two years of service in the Army Air Corp during World War II and a short time in Elyria; he lived the rest of his life close to where he was born.

He had a number of jobs during his working years, but none was more enjoyable to him than working the land on a John Deere. He loved the rhythmic sound of the tractor, the smell of fresh turned earth and the sight of grain pouring into the wagon at harvest. He particularly enjoyed the outdoors and in later years was content to tour the back roads of Delaware County reminisce of simpler times. He would think about the rustle of cattle in fresh straw or the sight of Holstein breath on winter morning as the cattle came into the barn. He would remember the smell of yesterdayÂ’’s mowed clover and timothy or the family vacations to Minnesota fishing spots and in particular the tug of Northern Pike at the other end of the line as well as ice cold watermelon in the milk cooler. He would mention the sight of a cock pheasant running between corn rows on a crisp fall morning as he made his way through the stalks with two-row corn picker mounted on his prized John Deere model 60.

Jack is survived by his children, Allan of Sumter, S.C., Candace Hartzler (Clem Hodge) of Worthington, Philip (Christy) of Lewis Center, Tom of Danville and Michael (Sue) of Henderson, Nev.; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and brother, Homer Viers of Marysville.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by son, David; granddaughter, Nicole Goodman; sister, Stella Mann; brothers, Jim and Don Viers; and former wife, May E (BarrowÂ’s) Viers.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, 75 W. William St. Delaware, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday with Celebrant Don Lockwood officiating.
