Junior guard Andy Winters (Columbus/Bishop Watterson) scored 6 points down the stretch, including a basket that put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay, as the Bishops wiped out a 10-point deficit to defeat Rhodes 74-65 in the championship game of the Rhodes Thanksgiving Classic on Saturday in Memphis, Tenn.

Rhodes had taken a 55-45 lead on Andrew Galow’s jumper with 10:41 left in regulation time, and the Lynx still held a 61-54 advantage on John Dunavant’s jumper with 5:59 to go.

Ohio Wesleyan scored the next 7 points to tie the game, getting jumpers from Winters and senior wing Tim Brady (Dublin/Jerome) and a game-tying 3-pointer from freshman wing Nick Felhaber (Holland/Toledo St. John’s) that made it 61-61 with 4:17 remaining.

The teams traded points twice before Winters broke a 65-65 tie with a jumper with 1:17 remaining. After a Lynx turnover, Felhaber buried another 3-pointer to extend the lead to 5 points, and Brady and junior post Marshall Morris (Tulsa, Okla./Jenks) each sank a pair of free throws to account for the 74-65 final.

Brady scored 4 points and sophomore post Reuel Rogers (Columbus/Bexley) added 3 as Ohio Wesleyan raced to a 10-2 lead, and the Bishops led by as many as 15 points when Brady’s jumper gave Ohio Wesleyan a 28-13 lead with less than 6 minutes left in the first half.

Rhodes scored the final 8 points of the period, highlighted by 3-point plays from Galow and Dunavant, and the Lynx opened the second half with an 11-3 burst that featured 5 points by Dunavant, giving Rhodes a 40-36 lead, and the Lynx got back-to-back 3-pointers from Dunavant and Geoff Livsey to extend the lead to 50-40 with 12:34 to go.

Brady led the Bishops with 22 points, while Morris finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Winters added 11 points and 4 assists.

Dunavant led Rhodes with 19 points.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Ohio Northern 64, Ohio Wesleyan 42

Freshman wing Mary Corbett (Columbus/Upper Arlington) hit a 3-pointer to give Ohio Wesleyan an early lead, but Ohio Northern used a 13-0 run to take the lead for good and went on to defeat the Bishops in the second round of the Thanksgiving Classic, hosted by Ohio Northern University on Sunday in Ada.

Corbett buried a 3-pointer on the opening possession of the game, and after a hoop by sophomore post Tamra Londot (Utica), another Corbett 3-pointer gave the Bishops an 8-7 lead.

Morgan Dumbaugh hit back-to-back baskets to give the Polar Bears the lead, and Cenzie Yoder added a bucket and a 3-point play during the 13-0 Ohio Northern run that gave the hosts a 20-8 lead with 13:29 left in the first half.

Ohio Wesleyan fought back with a Londot basket and a jumper by junior guard Kandis Walker (Utica) to cut the deficit to 20-12, and the Bishops were still within 29-20 after a 3-pointer by senior wing Elyse Wenger (Loveland) with 6:01 left in the first half, but that was as close as the Bishops would come.

Freshman wing Caroline Welker (Delaware/Hayes) led the Bishops with 7 points.

Joanna Snyder led Ohio Northern with 17 points.

Otterbein 65, Ohio Wesleyan 50

Junior guard Kandis Walker (Utica) and senior wing Elyse Wenger (Loveland) hit 3-pointers as Ohio Wesleyan built a 6-point first-half lead, but Otterbein came back to even the score and pulled away during the second half to record a win in the first round of the Thanksgiving Classic, hosted by Ohio Northern University on Saturday in Ada.

Walker knocked down a 3-pointer to break a 15-15 tie, and after the teams traded points, it was Wenger connecting from outside to give the Bishops a 23-17 lead with 4:22 left in the first half.

Otterbein answered with an 11-0 run, collecting a 3-point play and a lay-in by Hannah Day and a pair of lay-ins from Rachel Snedegar, to take a 28-23 lead with less than 2 minutes left in the half, and the Cardinals were up by a 30-26 count at halftime.

Walker followed her own missed shot to open the second-half scoring, and the Bishops were still within a hoop after a 3-pointer by freshman wing Mary Corbett (Columbus/Upper Arlington) and a pair of hoops from sophomore post Tamra Londot (Utica) narrowed a 9-point deficit to 49-47 with 7:34 to go.

Ohio Wesleyan would score just once more during the contest, however, that coming when freshman post Kristin Henning (Beavercreek) hit a 3-pointer to make it a 55-50 game with 2:25 remaining.

The Cardinals would close out the game with a 10-0 run for the 15-point final margin.

Walker led the Bishops with 14 points, while freshman wing Caroline Welker (Delaware/Hayes) added 10 points.

Day led Otterbein with 18 points.
