When Lewis Center resident Mary O’Connor-Shaver attended her first dog auction in 2006, she knew that something needed to be done to put an end to the events where hundreds of discarded puppy mill dogs, oftentimes in poor health, are sold to the highest bidder.

2011, 2012: big years of the library

This year has been a history-making year for the Delaware County District Library, on many different fronts. The opening of the long-awaited Orange Branch certainly changed the history and the future of the library, and you have fully embraced the facility, its services and its staff. Since it opened, the staff at the Orange Branch has issued nearly 10,000 new library cards, and you have checked out more than 170,000 books, DVDs, magazines and audio books. We could not be more pleased with the success of this beautiful and welcoming new facility!

Top stories of 2011, No. 1: Union concessions covered front pages in 2011

With tough economic times and state legislation seeking to curb collective bargaining rights serving as the backdrop, the most frequent news item of the year in Delaware County involved the paychecks of those on the public payroll. With few exceptions, the county’s public service employees — from teachers to law enforcement and even some administrators — accepted unprecedented levels of wage freezes and, in some cases, pay cuts in 2011.

Key to starting a successful garden is a plan

At this juncture in the year, we resolve to make changes. Gym parking lots go from ghostly unoccupied in December to double-parked mania overnight, weight loss commercials abound, and your close friend who invited you to the cookie exchange three weeks ago is now preaching her new calorie-cutting lifestyle.

City decides against DATA funding request

Although the Delaware Area Transit Authority will be getting some funds from the city of Delaware next year, it won’t be anywhere near the $53,000 it had asked for. Instead, Delaware City Council has settled on giving DATA $15,000. While providing only about a quarter of the money DATA sought, Delaware City’s contribution is actually double the amount the city has provided in the past. It also exceeds DATA’s second largest request, which was about $6,700 directed to Orange Township.

Senior Ali Kelly has switched gears from being in music and the arts earlier in her high school career to a totally different path — she is now in the welding program at the Delaware Area Career Center. And her future promises to take yet another direction; Ali has decided after graduation to attend the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute, part of Universal Technical Institute, in Phoenix. Originally, she was interested in marine mechanics (“I’ve always liked the sea.”), then engineering, followed by art school.
