An Ostrander man accidentally shot himself in the hand while cleaning his gun Christmas night.
Delaware County Sheriff’s deputies on Sunday night found Jonathan Carey in the garage of his Mink Street Road house in Ostrander, holding his left hand above his head, according to a Delaware County Sheriff’s Office incident report.
Carey had forgotten about a round of ammunition in the chamber of his 40-caliber gun when he was cleaning it in the basement at about 9:30 p.m. Sunday. He had forgotten to take the magazine out of the gun and accidentally fired the lone bullet into his left hand, the report said.
Carey, who was the only person home during the incident, had a neighbor call an ambulance after the shooting. Deputies were dispatched to the scene at about 9:50 p.m. Sunday and found the bullet in a concrete wall in the basement next to where Carey had been sitting.
Alcohol was not a factor in the shooting. Carey was transported to the hospital for treatment.

This doesn’t quite make sense. If he had forgotten to remove the magazine from his weapon, isn’t it safe to assume there wasn’t just a “lone” bullet in the gun? I think Melissa means to say that he had forgotten to clear the chamber of the firearm. That is where a single round can be hidden if you don’t follow proper safety protocols.
