Big Walnut’s girls track and field team got the season off to a fast start, finishing third at Saturday’s Newark Invitational.
The Golden Eagles, led by the speedy Brea Medlock, closed with 67 points. Canal Winchester won with 128 points while Dublin Scioto joined the Indians and Golden Eagles in the top three with 101.
“Brea had an outstanding day,” Big Walnut coach Joe Evener said. “She won the 400-meter dash (1:02.49), placed in both of the shorter races (seventh in both the 100 and 200) and led off the 4x400 relay, which finished second (4:26.40). She is such a special athlete. Six races in one day, including prelims, would pretty much drain a lesser athlete.”
Medlock was easily the busiest Eagle, but others made some serious noise, too, including Jordan Lyle and Gabi Smith. Lyle finished second in the pole vault by clearing 8-06 while Smith nabbed runner-up honors in the long jump with a leap of 13-10 3/4.
“I have to admit, being over spring break, I was a little nervous about how well we could do,” Evener said. “But the girls who were there performed unbelievably. I loved how the 15 girls who made the trip stepped up and competed … and isn’t that what it’s all about? The performances will help us start to create a solid lineup to carry us through the season.”
