The Patriots used two touchdown runs by Myles Robinson and a huge fumble recovery and return from defensive lineman Marshall Davis to pull away for their 42-28 Ohio Capital Conference Cardinal Division victory over the Irish Friday at Patriot Stadium.

Liberty (4-4, 3-2 OCC Cardinal) never trailed in the game, but Dublin Scioto (2-6, 1-4) was able to answer every Patriot score — until late in the third quarter.

That’s when Robinson, who scored the first touchdown of the game on a five-yard run, carried over from four yards with 1:20 left in the third quarter, giving Liberty a 28-21 lead, the one it would not surrender again.

But the biggest play came in the fourth, when Davis picked up an Irish fumble at the Patriots’ 17 and returned it 83 yards for a touchdown, giving Liberty a 35-21 edge. Robinson scored again, this time from two yards out with 4:30 left, to put the Patriots up 42-21, enough to handle a late Scioto touchdown.

Robinson rushed for 70 yards on 20 carries and his three touchdowns to lead the Patriot rushers, while Joey Longhino completed 16 of 21 passes for 254 yards and two touchdowns, one each to Phil Osolinski and Bryson Wray. A.J. Motika led all receivers with seven catches for 142 yards, Osolinski added five catches for 70 yards and his score, and Wray and Robinson each had two receptions, Wray for 36 yards and a touchdown and Robinson for six yards.

Scioto’s Evan DeMars completed 29 of 40 attempts for 331 yards and two touchdowns, completing seven passes each to receivers Will Houston and Tim Shadoan. Houston caught one touchdown pass and rushed for two more, leading all rushers with 82 yards on 27 carries. Mason Matheny also had six catches for 87 yards and a touchdown.

The Patriots visit Westerville Central at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
