Making my own baby food
You’ll never guess what I got for Christmas — OK, I’ll tell you. As requested, my family bought me a Baby Bullet — the baby cousin of the Magic Bullet. For those of you not familiar with the Bullet, it’s basically a small, easy-to-use blender. The Baby Bullet comes with a complete “make-your-own-baby-food” storage system. It’s cute, cool and convenient.
Now hold on, I know what you’re thinking. Did I succumb to the “As Seen on TV” advertising blitz and purchase a product that isn’t really necessary? Well, yes. Yes, I did. I realize mothers for millennia have been making their own baby food without the assistance of a mini-blender and miniature storage cups complete with “date-made” dials and smiley faces. No, I rationally do know that I could be making my own baby food in my own adult-sized blender or even mashing it up myself.
But, I have to confess, the quick and convenient features of this product reeled me in. I really love making Sammy’s food with it. It’s so fun. We’ve already tried sweet potatoes, bananas, applesauce, avocadoes and next up on the menu is squash. Fortunately, Sam seems to enjoy whatever I set before him, so feeding time is a real pleasure.
In a matter of 10 to 15 minutes I can puree an apple and fill about 5 jars for the refrigerator and then puree a squash and fill about as many for the freezer and — BaddaBoom, BaddaBing — food for a week at only pennies a serving.
You’ll have to forgive my excitement. I fed my three other babies primarily from the store-bought little jars so this is a new adventure for me. For those of you who have been doing this for years, kudos! And if you’d like to try it, consider the Bullet (which fortunately we found at a VERY good sale price). However, I’ll be the first to admit you can do it without such a specially-marketed product. My husband always says I’m a sucker for packaging and I suppose that’s true! But in my defense, this is one product that motivated me to make a good choice for Sammy’s health and the environment.
