Myers, Brookshire win regional titles

Big Walnut junior Abe Myers and Olentangy senior Kyle Brookshire won regional titles to highlight opening-day action of the Division I Region 3 championship meet Wednesday at Pickerington North High School.

Myers saved his best for last, finishing with an effort of 163-03 in his sixth and final throw to take top honors in the boys discus and advance to the upcoming state showcase as one of the top seeds. Brookshire, meanwhile, won a regional title in the boys pole vault by clearing 14-02 — a mark nearly a full foot higher than any other competitor.

Other state qualifiers included Big Walnut’s Kaley Rammelsberg, who finished third in the girls high jump (5-04); and Orange’s Nate Roush, who finished fourth in the boys pole vault (13-0).

Orange’s boys 4×800 relay team (Tommy Heiden, Tyler King, Andrew Schroff and Hunter Moore) also punched a ticket to next week’s state showcase, finishing third in the region with a time of 7:56.04.

Those who qualified for Friday’s running event finals included Orange’s Mackenzie Blendick, who advanced as the eighth seed with a prelim time of 15.81 seconds in the girls 100-meter hurdles; the Pioneers’ Grace Frye, who qualified eighth in the girls 300 hurdles with an effort of 45.63 seconds; Orange’s Jayden Rodgers, who won his prelim heat in 14.65 seconds to advance to the finals of the boys 110 hurdles; Hayes’ Deven Ward, who finished with the third-fastest prelim time of 10.94 seconds in the boys 100-meter dash and sixth-fastest time of 21.83 seconds in the 200; and the Pioneers’ TJ Coates, who finished with the fourth-fastest prelim time of 48.87 seconds in the boys 400.

In relay action, Liberty’s girls 4×200 team (Abby Summers, Carrie Lawal, Brea White and Sydney Englehart) won its preliminary heat with a time of 1:43.24 to advance to Friday’s final and Orange’s girls 4×100 foursome (Brenda Agyekum, Angel Frye, Ahtiona Carter and Grace Frye) and Liberty’s girls 4×100 quartet (Lauren Walsh, Sienna Sakich, Englehart and Summers) advanced with the fourth- and seventh-best prelim times of 49.16 and 49.19 seconds, respectively. Orange also qualified in the girls 4×400 relay as Grace Frye, Brynna Johnson, Angel Frye and Allison Guagenti combined to finish with the fourth-fastest prelim time (4:00.16).

As for the boys, Orange’s 4×200 team (Joel Sarpong Coates, Zach Harrison and Kevin Acheampong) finished second in its prelim heat in 1:28.90 to advance to the upcoming final. The Pioneers’ 4×100 (Brandon Ransom, Harrison, Sarpong and Rodgers) and 4×400 (Coates, King, Christian Wright and Harrison) relay teams also advanced, finishing as the sixth and second seeds with respective efforts of 43.26 seconds and 3:22.90. Olentangy also advanced in the 4×400 as Jeremy Kendle, Anthony Sasso, Joel Michael and Zach Balthaser combined to finish sixth in preliminary action in 3:25.36.

Division III

In a Division III regional in Lancaster, Delaware Christian freshman Lyssi Snouffer won a regional title with an effort of 5-07 in the high jump.
