Important upcoming meetings to attend
We are almost into March and it seems that winter has passed us by. Ground moisture is high, and thankfully, we have really missed out on the ice and snow so far this year. I hope we will slide right into spring without it.
There are a few upcoming meetings that I would like to make you aware of. On Friday, March 2, at Dawes Arboretum, there will be an all-day fruit and vegetable growers workshop. Speakers on fruit will include Brad Bergefurd, extension horticulturist (small fruit update), Celeste Welty, OSU entomologist (fruit insect management update); Mike Ellis, OSU Extension plant pathologist (tree and small fruit disease update); Gary Gao, small fruit specialist (commercial blueberry update).
Speaking on vegetables will be Hal Kneen, OSU Extension Meigs/Athens Co. (branding your product); Brad Bergefurd, OSU Extension horticulturist (vegetable update); Celeste Welty, (vegetable insect management update); and Hal Kneen on pest scouting in sweet corn. I will be speaking on connecting with your customers at the beginning of these sessions.
The cost for the day, which includes lunch and handouts, is $15. If interested, please call the extension office at 740–833-2030 to sign up.
New technology has sparked interest in new leasing arrangements. Due to this increased interest, OSU Extension, along with Ohio Farm Bureau Federation and the Soil and Water Conservation, will be sponsoring an informative Briefing on Oil and Gas Leasing. The event will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 7, at All Occasions Catering in Waldo. There is no charge and this briefing will try to address the questions and concerns that many people in the area have on the topic. To register, please call the Delaware County Farm Bureau office at 740–363-1613.
Key speakers will include Chris Penrose who will speak on the process and implications of horizontal drilling. He will discuss the pros and cons, show pictures of sites, and the impacts from local to global. Dale Arnold, director for energy services for the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation, will speak on land unitization requirements, repair/remediation practices, general payments, royalty and bonus provisions and leasing arrangements.
Rob Leeds is the OSU Extension Educator for Delaware County Ag/NR.
