Eight Gazette entries have been named finalists for 2011 Associated Press Society of Ohio awards, according to results released Friday.
Gazette graphic designer Halley Miller was named a finalist for:
- Best Graphic Artist
- Best Informational Graphic for “An Inside Look at the Zoo’s Wildlights”
- Best Illustration for “Readers Choice 2011” and for “Letters to Santa,” both of which were covers of special sections
- Best Full Page Layout for “ODOT, County Road Projects Take Shape.”
Former Gazette reporter Andrew Tobias, who is now a reporter for the Dayton Daily News, was named a finalist for:
- Best Business Writer
- Best Community Service for the series “From Prescription to Addiction”
- Best Investigative Reporting for “Former Commissioner Charged with Conflict of Interest.”
The Gazette competes in Division I, for newspapers in Ohio with a daily circulation up to 7,900. Entries for Division I were judged by editors from The Daily Times in Maryville, Tenn., and The Lake Sun in Camdenton, Mo.
“I am thrilled to see the excellent work done by Miller and Tobias recognized in this way, by their peers,” said Devon Immelt, Gazette editor.
The awards in actual order of finish — first, second and third places — will be announced at the APSO annual convention May 6 in Columbus. The General Excellence, First Amendment and Special Recognition award winners also will be announced at the meeting.
Sixty-seven daily newspapers submitted 2,928 entries in the contest, which featured news and sports stories, features, editorials, columns, graphics and photos from 2011.
The Associated Press is a not-for-profit news cooperative representing 1,500 newspapers and 5,000 broadcast stations in the United States. Members of AP include 87 daily newspapers in Ohio.
