Presidential election to pass $2B fundraising mark
Harold D. Pickens, 80, of Albion, Pa., died Wednesday (March 28, 2012) at the Soldiers and Sailors Home in Erie, Pa.
He was born in Marion on April 16, 1931, a son of the late Hacel and Mary E. Holt Pickens. Harold graduated from Frank B. Willis High School, Delaware, in 1949. He worked on the family farm and at various jobs until he entered the U.S. Army on Aug. 23, 1953. Harold stayed in the Army more than 21 years, until he retired on Jan. 1, 1975, as a Sgt. First Class. He was then employed by the U.S. Post Office in Albion in 1975 as a substitute rural mail carrier, until he became a permanent carrier, retiring in June 1993. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and picnics with his family at his pond.
He is survived by two sons, Duane L. Pickens of Erie and Neil S. (Tammy) Pickens of West Springfield; a daughter, Candace M. Bartoe of Albion; five grandchildren, Sean, Brendan, Michaela, Jessica and Sara; a brother, Richard; four sisters, Marilyn, Marcella, Ruby and Linda, all living in Ohio; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Harold was preceded in death by his ex-wife, Wilma A. Pickens; and four brothers, Clifford, Kenneth, Delmar and Albert.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the Burton Funeral Home, 525 Main Street East in Girard. There will be no calling hours and interment will be at the convenience of the family.
