When I think of Russ Martin, three words come to mind.… Integrity, caring, leader. From my interactions with Mr. Martin, he is here to serve the people of Delaware. He is professional at all times. I received a ticket a couple of winters ago when I slid on ice into the back of another vehicle. I had a question regarding the wording of the ticket. I called Russ Martin. I left a voicemail. Guess what? Russ called back, took the time to explain the wording and once done, asked if there was anyway else he could help me. He is totally approachable and willing to talk to us. Don’t put Russ in the “good ole boy” network. I’ve dealt with the “good ole boys” and he does not fit into that category at all.Yes, he’s been around Delaware quite awhile, but he does what is RIGHT, what is LAWFUL. Russ Martin is honest, professional, caring and has a high level of integrity. Ask people who work for him or have worked for him in the past. He is respected.
What Delaware needs is a problem solver to clean up the Sheriff’s Department. Kent Shafer is the person for the job! He has the credibility, personality and leadership skills necessary to do this . He transformed CPD in the mid 1990’s with his Mission Alligned Policing Program. Every “Community Policing Initiative” in CPD was developed and implemented by Commander Shafer. I have had the opportunity to work for and be mentored by him and can attest to his integrity and creative problem solving. Take Delaware Law Enforcement to a higher level and elect Kent Shafer as your Sherriff.
While several competent men have applied for the position of sheriff of Delaware County, none have the range of experience, training and charactr of Russ Martin. He will bring an even handed professionalism so sorely lacking in prior sheriffs and in the Columbus police force. Chief Martin wil also bring a much needed level of city-county cooperation missing for so long. I have worked as a Police volunteeer with Chief Martin for neraly eight years and have seen the respect he commands from both the city police and the county sheriff deputies. Any other choice would be a secondary choice. As for the prior change of “double dipping” as these men fall into that catagory, how else do you get years of experience and command training?
Kent Shafer has a stellar career with the Columbus Division of Police. You won’t find anyone with a negative comment regarding his work ethics, work accomplishments, and management skills. He also has a vast array of specialized law enforcement experiences managing various departments within his division, leaving a trail of successes to complete his career and resume with Columbus Police. He has been a loyal resident of Delaware County since 1991. He has been, and will continue to be, a dedicated citizen who completely supports his local community. Commander Shafer would definately bring to the table the skills to effictively manage the Delaware County Sheriff’s Dept. and make it an agency anyone would be proud to work for, and an agency the community would feel safe entrusting their most delicate possessions…their families!
I don’t know enough about any candidate to make a decision. I’m sure that there is more information than was published in the newspaper. There must be the complete application. And I’m sure that each candidate will be interviewed. If I had access to this information, then, maybe, I could arrive at a decision.
I have a relative that works for the Sheriff’s Department, and they feel that Russ Martin would make an excellent Sheriff — said Mr. Martin was “above reproach — has the highest of ethical standards” — and they hope Mr. Martin is named Sheriff.
I’ve lived in Delaware all of my life. The City of Columbus Police Commander coached my son in baseball for 5 years, and personally, I think he would be the best Sheriff that Delaware County has ever seen. He has lived in Delaware for quite a few years as well. My vote goes to Kent. In my opinion, no one could do that job better, and without a doubt make every decision for the people of this community.
Isn’t it a shame no one can think outside the box long enough to find someone with no ties to this crooked little cow town of Delaware for sheriff. why does everyong want Russ Martin?? oh wait I know he’s one of the good ole boys he has done such a steller job to this point and time and after all he was thinking of retiring from Delaware city so why not draw a pension and a paycheck
Ok, I agree with most of what you said, but “crooked little cow town of Delaware”? I have to take exception with that statement. It’s not our community of Delaware that is crooked, which I think will be a proven fact once Kent Shafer, an outstanding Delaware County citizen for many years that has unquestionable ethics and high standards is elected Sheriff of Delaware County. As the new Sheriff of Delaware County, Kent Shafer will be a dedicated servant to the community of Delaware County and “WILL” restore creditability to the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department.
I have known Kent for several years and can attest to his ethical standards. Most of his career has been centered around problem solving troubled operations. He is a perfect fit for this position. His leadership skills carry over in the academic community as well. He has accreditations on several publications. Most importantly is the time he devotes to volunteer work in the community.

WELL SAID NORM, I completely agree!
