Earl DeWitt Jr.
Earl DeWitt Jr. died Wednesday (April 11, 2012) at Grady Memorial Hospital after a long and well lived life.
Born May 8, 1932, in Galena to Earl and Dora (Cantleberry) DeWitt, he was a lifelong resident of Delaware County. Throughout his life, Earl consistently demonstrated compassion and concern for other people and sought ways to be helpful. He valued each and every friendship that blessed his life and enjoyed delighting others with guitar music, letters, cards and handmade jewelry, all delivered with an inimitable grin of satisfaction. Those who knew Earl well admired his determination, honesty and ability to cut to the chase. He will always be missed. Earl enjoyed many hobbies — shopping, fishing, writing and most of all, collecting numerous genres of ornamentation. He was proud of his employment at Alpha Industries where he worked for 40 years and was known for his dependability. When his health permitted, he attended Grace Baptist Church where he learned of heaven from Pastor Bane. Earl deeply valued his association with Grace Baptist where he always felt welcome.
He is survived by his best friend, Terri O’Connell, longtime caregiver; friend, Wayne Haddad; roommate, James Case; nieces and nephews; a host of friends; and many professional associates.
He was predeceased by a brother, James Cantleberry in 2003.
A memorial service for Earl will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Grace Baptist Church in Delaware. In honor of Earl’s memory and consistent with his demonstrated values, friends and associates are encouraged to do something helpful for another person. No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted ~ Aesop.
