The Big Walnut and Olentangy Orange boys tennis teams put on quite a show in Tuesday’s OCC-Capital Division opener in Sunbury, with the host Golden Eagles hanging on for a tough 3-2 triumph.
“I thought there was some high quality tennis being played out there,” Big Walnut coach Mike McDonough said after watching his team improve to 2-0 overall in 1-0 in league play. “Orange is definitely one of our rivals, but it’s a good rivalry in that the kids get along well and compete hard seemingly every time we meet up.”
The Eagles picked up a pair of singles wins and another on the doubles courts to secure the win. Dan Violet and Russell McMurry picked up the singles win at second and third singles, respectively. Violet beat the Pioneers’ (2-1, 0-1 OCC) Tim Hawk 6-4, 6-2, while McMurry knocked off P.J. Dahn 6-2, 6-2.
The doubles win came from Sean Tribble and Logan Adams, who teamed up to beat Orange’s Jonathan Ricci and Jon Peddicord 6-4, 6-0.
Orange got its wins from Doug Ganim at first singles and the duo of Ryan Jay and Joe Lee at first doubles. Ganim beat Big Walnut’s Nate Randall 7-5, 6-2 while Jay and Lee defeated Cory Walters and Nate Fagan 6-2, 6-1 to smooth out the scoring.
