Dwight Harold Hewett

Dwight Harold Hewett, born June 21, 1917, in Lick­ing County to Dean L Hewett and Ada Ellen Myers Hewett passed away late Thurs­day evening (May 10, 2012) at the Arbors at Delaware.

He was pre­ceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Evah Belle Ward Hewett; a son, Harold Eugene Hewett; son-in-law, Neil Duane Rutan; brother, Dorace Paul Hewett; and a great-granddaughter, Miranda Stewart.

Dwight and Evah were mar­ried Oct. 24, 1936, and he served his coun­try in the U.S. Army dur­ing World War II. He farmed with his father in Lick­ing County until 1952 when he moved his fam­ily to Ash­ley, where he was employed at Ranco Man­u­fac­tur­ing and later at Bryant’s Lum­ber Yard until retire­ment. He served as Sun­day school super­in­ten­dent, elder and dea­con at the Stan­ton­town Advent Chris­t­ian Church. He was in com­mu­nity ser­vice as an Ash­ley vol­un­teer fire­man, coun­cil­man and mayor of the Vil­lage of Ash­ley. He was a mem­ber of the Clyde C. Kelt­ner Post of the Ash­ley Amer­i­can Legion. Dwight was known for his depend­able nature going out dur­ing bad weather to repair fur­naces to keep fam­i­lies from suf­fer­ing from the cold. He was very tal­ented in his wood­work­ing skills from turn­ing wooden bowls to mak­ing dul­cimers, book cases and help­ing while in his late 80’s to fin­ish the inside of a log cabin, even to climb­ing up on the roof. Dwight was a man of few words, but when he talked you listened.

He leaves behind his son, Ray­mond Dean (Velma Lee) Hewett; daugh­ter, Jane Ellen Hewett Rutan; nine grand­chil­dren, Harold Gene Hewett, Deana Lee (Jeff) Shad­wick, Glenda Sue (Mike) Feasel, Peggy Lynn Hewett, Cathy Elaine (Kerry) Stew­art, Nancy Lavonne (Jon) Swaf­ford, Roger Allen (Kelly) Hewett, Neil Dex­ter Rutan and Nathaniel Daniel (Gerri) Rutan; 20 great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter; one stepgreat-great-granddaughter; and one stepgreat-great-great-grandson.

The fam­ily will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. Mon­day, May 14, at the Rod­man Neeper Funeral Home, 1510 W. William St. at Val­ley­side Drive, Delaware, and where funeral ser­vices will be held at 11 a.m. Tues­day, May 15, with the Rev. David Young offi­ci­at­ing. Bur­ial will fol­low in Ash­ley Union Ceme­tery where the Delaware County Vet­er­ans Asso­ci­a­tion will pro­vide mil­i­tary hon­ors at graveside.
