A librarian’s favorite inquiry

“Can you recommend a good book to me?” That question is a favorite among Delaware County District Library’s librarians, but it seems to be a question many people are reluctant to ask. I sometimes think that folks hesitate to ask us to recommend a good book because they may be concerned that their request is “not serious” or not exactly asking for information.

I recently asked a customer who looked a little confused while she was wandering through the shelves if she needed help. She quietly said, “I’m looking for a good mystery and I don’t know where to start. I haven’t had the time to read for a long while and I’m a bit out of touch with authors and such.” Her words were music to my ears because I am also a mystery reader, and as with all of the librarians, I enjoy sharing recommendations.

As we would with any reference questions, the librarians may ask you some questions about what you like to read to make sure we recommend something appropriate. Once we’ve been able to drill down a bit, undoubtedly we will be able to match your likes with a great selection.

And don’t be surprised if we ask you to let us know if you liked the books we recommend. Your feedback makes us better librarians!

Please don’t ever hesitate to ask any one of us for a good book to read. But beware: You may walk out of the library with an armload … and that’s OK, too.
