Freshman outfielder J.J. Buckey (Toledo/Ottawa Hills) singled home a pair of runs to bring Ohio Wesleyan within a run, but Capital held off the Bishop rally and escaped Littick Field with a 7-6 non-conference win in Ohio Wesleyan’s home opener on Wednesday.

Trailing, 7-3, going into the bottom of the ninth, the Bishops loaded the bases with nobody out as senior first baseman Nathan Strome (Sidney) opened the inning by ripping a double down the leftfield line, senior outfielder Seth Frentsos (Delaware/Hayes) singled, and junior second baseman Zach Bott (Dublin/Coffman) was hit by a pitch. Senior shortstop Steve Gaydos (Strongsville) followed with a fly ball to center, scoring Strome and sending Frentsos to third.

Junior catcher James Toland (Stow/Walsh Jesuit) was hit by a pitch to reload the bases, bringing the go-ahead run to the plate in Buckey, and he delivered a single to center that scored Frentsos and Bott, with Toland checking in at third.

Senior outfielder James DiBiasio (Westlake) greeted Capital closer Jacob Thuman by slicing a line drive to left, but Capital leftfielder Patrick Jackson made a shoestring catch, then threw to third base to double up sophomore outfielder Jack Lawson (Powell/Worthington Kilbourne), who had entered the game as a pinch-runner when Capital made the move to Thuman.

Ohio Wesleyan had taken a 1-0 lead in the second on a 2-out single by Bott and a double by Gaydos.

Capital erupted for 6 runs in the top of the fourth, capped by Andy Grillo’s grand slam down the leftfield line.

The Bishops got 2 runs back in the fifth on another Gaydos RBI double and a Buckey sacrifice fly, but Capital tacked on a run in the seventh on Thuman’s RBI double.

Gaydos and Buckey drove in 3 runs apiece for Ohio Wesleyan.

Junior righthander Brandon Sega (Columbus/Upper Arlington) was the starting and losing pitcher for Ohio Wesleyan.

Garrett Griffin was credited with the win for Capital, with Thuman collecting a save.
