Dear Fred, please read my comment - you are preaching the Rush Limburgh line without thought to the real costs of insured Americans.

Anyone who is self insured in this country is one major illness (cancer, for example) away from financial ruin. Try to get insurance after a diagnosis of cancer - any type. The individual mandate is as necessary as car insurance. It protects not just the individual but all of the rest of us - when the uninsured present at the emergency room WE ARE THE ONES WHO PICK UP THE TAB. This is not rocket science, folk. There is no such thing as free medical care (except maybe for the military). If we could withhold emergency medical care from people short sighted enough not to buy insurance i'd think twice about the mandate - but we can't, alas. So get on board - the mandate is to protect the rest of us. Enough rubbish about Big Brother government - the US is going down the tubes eaten up by inefficient and fearfully expensive medical care - the Affordable Health Care Act is an effort to address this critical problem. Other counties do it -- surely we can't be last in everything??

It is clear we need to do something about healthcare as a country. The costs are ridiculous. If you want to witness the need for help, attend the Grace Medical Clinic at Andrews house on Wednesday and see how many people come. Our country loses productivity every day due to people who can't afford health care.

Why do hospitals and insurance companies spend millions of dollars on advertising and huge salaries for executives when there are so many people who need care? To keep their wallets fat and their luxury homes. They sure don't seem to care much about the American people they are supposed to serve.

Do we really want to continue on this road to entrenching a huge divide between the haves and have nots? We are marching on a path back to the times when the aristocrats controlled countries and all the commoners lived meager lives only dreaming of better days. Those are the days that brought my ancestors to America from Europe to escape conscription and a class system with little hope of upward mobility.

The Individual Mandate is the right thing to do morally and economically.
See John's comments for the moral reasons.
      Economic reasons:
(1)The average U.S. family and employees pay more than $1,000 a year to compensate for the uninsured. (USA Today)
(2)The more people in the system, the lower the premium will be. This
is already happening due to the parts of the act which are in effect which
accept previously uninsured groups.
(3) Uninsured persons put off going to the doctor until a serious illness develops. This puts them at risk and costs the taxpayers.
(4) Only a small percentage of individuals, those who can afford it,
will be asked to pay a tax for not buying insurance.
For answers, go to : healthcare.gov/law/full/iindex.html
For a non-government source, go to factcheck.org and ask questions.

Plain & simple -- thousands of US citizens die every year because they don't get decent health care because they are uninsured and can't afford it. "Obamacare" is a sincere attempt to get insurance coverage for millions of uninsured Americans. So they can get medical care. So they can get well. So they can live.
