Gordon “Gus” Merritt Stewart
Gordon “Gus” Merritt Stewart passed away Tuesday (July 10, 2012) at Willow Brook Christian Village in Delaware.
Gus was born April 26, 1926 in Dundee, Ill., son of Alice Roehl Stewart and Emery Verne Stewart. He graduated from Dundee High School and attended the University of Illinois for a semester before enlisting in the Army Air Corps. He served in World War II as a tail gunner, and upon returning from service he enrolled at Ohio Wesleyan University. He graduated from OWU with a business degree in 1950. While there, he was a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and lettered in varsity football. He married Maryanne Wright in 1949 and lived with his family on Mason Avenue in Delaware until her death in 1999. Gus worked for 20 years at Sunray Stove Company as materials and purchasing director and then worked at the Nippert Corp until his retirement. In 2000, Gus married Bernadine Kern of Marysville and they were married until her death in 2009. In 2010, he moved back to Delaware and lived at Willow Brook.
Gus served on the boards of the Arts Castle and the mental health associations. He was an avid golfer and tennis player and loved sports of all kinds. He loved traveling to Charleston, S.C., and Punta Gorda, Fla., in the winters. He was a strong supporter of OWU.
Gus is survived by his daughters, Cynthia Stewart Welch of Madison, Wis., Nancy Stewart Lane (Joe) of Charleston, S.C., and Lynn Stewart Seguin (Jim) of Columbus, as well as eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He is further survived by three stepchildren, Cheryl Levy (Larry) of Michigan, Lynnette Salton (Jeff) of Canada and Kevin Kern (Kristin) of Marysville, and their families.
Preceding him in death are his first wife, Maryanne Wright Stewart, and his second wife, Bernadine Kern; his half sister, Nancy Hubbs of Illinois; his parents; and other relatives and friends.
A celebration of life will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday, July 15, in the Terrace Room of Willow Brook Christian Village, 100 Willow Brook Way South, Delaware.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent in memory of Gus Stewart to the Ohio Wesleyan University Team OWU fund, part of the ‘W’ Association. (Team OWU, Mowry Alumni Center, 61 S.Sandusky St., Delaware, OH 43015). Arrangements by Robinson Funeral Home.
