Hiel K. Chambers, 91, of Delaware, passed away Saturday (March 5, 2011) at Marion General Hospital.
He was born on Jan. 31, 1920, in Delaware, to the late Laurence L. and E. Florence (Adams) Chambers. Hiel was a 1938 graduate of Willis High School. After high school, he served in the U.S. Air Force as an aircraft and engine mechanic, where he spent two years in England, six months in France, two months in Belgium and a total of 39 months in the service. Hiel was also the recipient of the ETO ribbon with four bronze stars. Hiel and his father operated L.L. Chambers and Son Auto Repair shop for 51½ years.
He is survived by his daughter, Pam (Ray) Kraus; two grandchildren, Tiffany Kraus and Ken (Leslie) Kraus; and two great-grandchildren, Andy and Nikki Kraus.
He was preceded in death by two previous wives, Orpha Jean Strupper of 18 years, and Delores Rose Durst of 36 years.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, at the Rodman Neeper Funeral Home. Funeral services for Hiel will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 9 at Rodman Neeper Funeral Home with burial following in Oak Grove Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted.
