Chester Arthur Hartley

Chester Arthur Hartley, 77, of Lakeview, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday (Aug. 5, 2012) after a mercifully short bout with cancer.

Chet was born March 23, 1935, in Salem, to the late Alfred and Ethel Stanley Hartley. He was also preceded in death by an infant brother Cecil and a sister Edith Silvernale.

Chet graduated from Olney Friends Boarding School in Barnesville, followed by two years at Guilford College in North Carolina. After retirement from a varied career selling insurance and home improvement, Chet started a thrift store and food pantry called the “Give & Take Program” in West Mansfield on the principle “give if you can, take if you need.” He volunteered for several years before turning it over to the current volunteers. He then retired for good at Indian Lake to fish as often as he wanted with his fishing buddy, Louie.

He was a member of the Society of Friends (Quakers), the Christ United Methodist Church in Lakeview and a former member of the West Mansfield United Methodist Church. The family would like to thank both church groups for their prayers, cards and kindness. Thanks also to the Universal Home Health & Hospice for their concern and support and the Lakeview EMS for their help when needed.

Chet is survived by his wife of 48 years, Nancy Pool Hartley, whom he married in Delaware on Nov. 15, 1963; sons, James (Amy) Hartley of Cincinnati and Robert (Diann) Hartley of Streetsboro; grandchildren, Sean Hartley, Ryan Hartley, Alicia Penn, Brandon (Mason) Hartley and Jordyn Hartley; great-grandchildren, Lily Dehring and Cadence Hartley; a brother, William Hartley; and sister, Dorothy Gaskella. Chet also had two daughters, Joyce and Judy, by his first wife, Jessie Frazer Hartley.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, 2012, at Marlborough Cemetery, Delaware, with the Rev. Rob Kilgore officiating.

In lieu of flowers, if desired, donations may be made to the Give & Take Program, 115 South Main St., West Mansfield, OH 43358.

The Smith-Eichholtz Funeral Home, Lakeview assisted the family with arrangements.
