Bring the farm to you

Chickens chillin’ in your front yard, goats gathering at your family picnic or ducks dancing in your school parking lot … and you don’t have to worry about set up and clean up? This idea is pure brilliance.

A friend of mine and former education director at Stratford Ecological Center, Christa Hein, has created an amazingly unique business specializing in bringing you farm experiences.

According to her website, bringthefarmtoyou.com, she can bring the farm right to your front door, whether you are an individual, a school, a church, a business, a birthday party or a group of friends for Ladies Night Out. Bring the Farm to You wants to “inspire and ignite your desire to roll up your sleeves and get back to basics!” Hein is doing just that with educational and fun hands-on programs on the go.

The adventures aren’t just with furry farm animal friends either. Hein can provide programs centering on farmsteading (beekeeping, worm composting, green cleaning and maple sugaring); food (canning parties, making dairy delicacies, and cidering); fibers (sheep to sweater, felting parties and spinning); and plants (organic gardening, classroom gardening and school gardens).

Parties and events can be big or small. Can you imagine having a farm animal birthday party? Bring the Farm to You was recently highlighted in Columbus Parent Magazine (September 2012) where the feature was parties for kids. Prices, which range from $300 to $500, don’t have a limit to the number of kids attending, so parents can consider doing a joint party with a friend or neighbor to help defray the cost. These parties would be perfect for large neighborhood or family events as well. The bonus? Hein scoops all the mess up when she leaves. How’s that for full service?

Special programs featured this fall include the chick hatching program which is only available through Thanksgiving this year and the apple cidering program, available only in the fall.

You can sign up for Bring the Farm to You’s e-farm newsletter and also receive a free e-book by Hein titled “The Natural Spirit of Art.” Her blog is fun to read, too, and has inspired me to take action on some projects I have been putting on the back burner-even if taking action on them is imperfect action. Kudos to Hein for following her dream.
