Ethel Mary Kernan, 96, of Delaware and formerly of Akron passed away Sunday (July 17, 2011).
Born in Akron to the late Alex and Julia Varga, she was a graduate of Akron South High School. Ethel was an executive secretary at Polsky’s Department Store in Akron for many years. She married James V. Kernan in 1944. Ethel was very active with the Fairlawn Park Garden Civic Center. She loved flowers and won many blue ribbons for her floral arrangements. She was a member and past president of the St. Sebastian’s Women’s Club. In 2002, Ethel moved to Central Ohio to be near her family and grandchildren.
Ethel is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Fred Winther of Powell; her grandson, Matthew (Kris) Kovalcik of Powell; and her three great-grandchildren, Jimmy, Ellie and Mary Kovalcik.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jim; and her parents, Alex and Julia Varga.
Family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m., Wednesday at the Rutherford Funeral Home at Powell, 450 W. Olentangy St., Powell. (The funeral home is located on West Olentangy Street/Powell Road/Ohio 750 one-fourth mile east of Sawmill Parkway.) A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, July 21, at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 10700 Liberty Road, Powell, with the Rev. Raymond Larussa, celebrant. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, Akron.
