Friends of Delaware library to hold book sale
The Friends of the Delaware County District Library are holding another Bargain Book Fair, and they have thousands of books, DVD’s, videos, and magazines for all ages and at rock bottom prices.
The Bargain Book Fair will be held at the library’s Orange Branch, 7171 Gooding Blvd., beginning with a “Members Only” event from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 28. The book fair will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 29. All proceeds support the services and programs of the library, and the library staff is always thankful for the support of our Friends. They have funded the Summer Reading Program, and with their generosity, the library has been able to enhance services and outreach to the public.
If you would like to become a member of the Friends so you can attend the “Members Only” event, you can join at the book fair or at delawarelibraryfriends.org. Levels of support range from $15 per year to a $250 lifetime membership. And you can turn any membership into a family membership by adding $10. You can also pick up a membership application at any library location.
As a reminder: The library will be open its regular hours throughout the Delaware County Fair, including Jug Day. Stop by to pick up a bestselling book or blockbuster movie, bring your children to story times, or simply enjoy the ambience of the library.
As a special treat for kids, the children’s staff at the Delaware (Main) Branch have put together a Little Brown Jug Scavenger Hunt that will take place all day on Thursday. At 4 p.m. on Jug Day, join us at the Delaware Library to watch some popular and current animé series with your friends. This month’s feature is Hetalia.
“LEGO Club: Angry Birds” will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Orange Branch. Kids aged 7–10 are invited to design their own angry birds with LEGOs. Call the Orange Branch at 740–549-2665 to preregister to attend this fun event.

Who invented the pencil?
I searched one of the library’s online reference books, Inventions and Inventors (Gale Virtual Reference) and found out that the earliest pencils date back to the ancient Greeks and Romans, who used flat cakes of lead to mark faint black lines on papyrus to guide writers. In the Middle Ages, people used thin rods of lead or silver for drawing. The marking ability of graphite was discovered in the 1500s, and the first modern pencil — that is, a pencil consisting of a wood case glued around a stick of graphite — was made in the late 1700s. In the mid-1800s, William Monroe, a Massachusetts cabinetmaker, invented a machine that cut and grooved wood slats precisely enough to make pencils. About the same time, the American inventor Joseph Dixon developed a machine that smoothed the surfaces of the pencils after the slats were cut apart. In 1861, the first pencil factory in the United States was built in New York City by Eberhard Faber.
