The Delaware Gazette

From broken bones to innovative farmers

I have been on hiatus from writing this past week thanks to some broken bones — not mine, but two of the four kids. Michael, who plays on his fourth-grade football team, tripped in his bedroom and fell nose first into the toy chest. Oh, the irony — here I was worried about football injuries. Not to be outdone, Sammy (almost 15 months old) fell and fractured his upper arm the very next weekend. Our 90-pound dog accidentally took him out when we were playing in the back yard.

Everyone is doing fine and healing up fast. I warned our older son and daughter to watch out because I feel like these things usually happen in three’s — an old wives’ tale that I am happy to prove wrong since this last weekend came and went with no injuries. Now, multiple doctor’s appointments later, here it is suddenly November and I am left wondering where October went.

This week I want to give a nod to the Innovative Farmers of Ohio who are having their annual conference at Ohio Wesleyan University this weekend. With the theme “Resetting the American Dinner Table: How Entrepreneurial Farmers Can Create a Healthy Nation and a Sustainable Food System,” the conference will host farmers from around the state for speakers, presentations and discussion. We are proud to host them here in Delaware and wish this great organization well in their important endeavors. We all eat and we all need farmers so this nonprofit, founded in 1994 to promote sustainable agricultural practices in Ohio and serve farmers and families, has a valuable mission which, essentially, pertains to all of us.
