Helen Cashman

Helen Cashman passed away peacefully in her sleep, surrounded by her family Tuesday morning ( Oct. 2, 2012).

Originally Helen Anguish from Malta-McConnelsville, Helen married William P. Cashman in 1943 and accompanied him to Charleston, S.C., when he volunteered for the U.S. Marine Corps. Like many in her generation, Helen proudly joined the war effort, working on the Army Air Field during the war. Bill and Helen moved to Delaware in 1950 and they ultimately settled on Casland Farm on U.S. 42N, the current site of the Cashman’s Drive Thru Feed Store and Horse Equipment. Helen was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and was awarded the St. Mary Parish Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010 for her dedication and devotion to the church. She was part of Bereavement Committee, the Prayer Chain and also provided use of the farm to St. Mary for the annual picnic. A staunch Democrat, Helen hosted fundraising events for Governors Ted Strickland and Richard Celeste. She was a proud member of the Downtown Delaware Business Community, starting with the Cashman’s True Value Hardware Store, then The Delaware Trading Company and The Courtyard. She also worked for The Ohio Wesleyan University.

Another proud achievement was owning and operating a working Morgan Horse Farm, Casland Farm. Helen’s love of all animals was one of her noteworthy traits and caring for her horses, cats and dogs was one of the great joys of her life.

Helen was 91 years old and is survived by her son, W. Patrick Cashman and daughter-in-law Kris Cashman; her daughter, Ann Cashman; her five grandchildren, Erin (Nathan) Holman, Bill (Jessica) Cashman, Andrea Cashman, Ed (Stephanie) Cashman and Megan (Brad) Hampu; and her six great-grandchildren, Alex, Ginnah, Dylan, MacKenzie, Zach and Emma.

She was preceded in death by her husband, W.P. Cashman; her brother, Edward; and her sister, Zeta.

There will be no calling hours. There will be a Funeral Mass in St. Mary Catholic Church at noon Thursday, Oct. 4, with the Rev. James Black as Celebrant immediately followed by a graveside service in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
