Iris Glorine Piatt
Iris Glorine Piatt, 73, of Delaware passed away Thursday evening (Oct. 18, 2012) at the Cherith Care Center at Willow Brook Christian Village, Delaware.
She was born April 29, 1939 in Cheshire to Homer and Mabel (Matthews) Davenport and graduated from Big Walnut High School and attended Franklin University. Iris married James Spurgeon who passed away in 1981. She married Robert Piatt in 1983 and retired from Ranco after having worked in Delaware and Plain City for 39 years. She was a devout Christian and member of the Delaware Bible Church in her early Christian life, the Grace Brethren Church for many years and most recently part of a home church meeting that met in her home. She enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; gardening; flowers; camping; cooking; and shopping. She also was very interested in herbal medicines and homeopathic approaches to life. Iris led many women and children’s Bible studies, and served the Lord for nine years as a missionary in Russia with her husband. Through her husband’s work assignments and mission work, Iris traveled to 27 foreign countries. One of Iris’ favorite enjoyments was that of following her children and grandchildren’s involvement in sports and other activities. She was a very devoted wife and mother who showed great mercy and compassion for people.
Iris is survived by her mother, Mabel Davenport of Delaware; husband of 28 years; three sons, Rick Spurgeon of Colorado Springs, Colo., Duane Spurgeon of Hardy, Va., and Robert (Rochelle) Piatt of Saluda, Va.; four daughters, Elaine (Ken) O’Neill of Dallas, Ga., Karie Piatt (Tom) Bowser of Columbus, Denise (Arnold) Harrel of Sunbury and Sharie Piatt (Matthew) Mezydlo of Westerville; 19 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and brother, Roger (Rose) Davenport of Plain City.
She was preceded in death by her father; two sons, Kelly Spurgeon in 1965 and Larry Spurgeon in 1975; and a sister, Carolyn Krause.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, at the Snyder-Rodman Funeral Center, 1510 W. William St. at Valleyside Drive, Delaware, and where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery.
