Iris Glorine Piatt

Iris Glo­rine Piatt, 73, of Delaware passed away Thurs­day evening (Oct. 18, 2012) at the Cherith Care Cen­ter at Wil­low Brook Chris­t­ian Vil­lage, Delaware.

She was born April 29, 1939 in Cheshire to Homer and Mabel (Matthews) Dav­en­port and grad­u­ated from Big Wal­nut High School and attended Franklin Uni­ver­sity. Iris mar­ried James Spur­geon who passed away in 1981. She mar­ried Robert Piatt in 1983 and retired from Ranco after hav­ing worked in Delaware and Plain City for 39 years. She was a devout Chris­t­ian and mem­ber of the Delaware Bible Church in her early Chris­t­ian life, the Grace Brethren Church for many years and most recently part of a home church meet­ing that met in her home. She enjoyed her chil­dren, grand­chil­dren and great-grandchildren; gar­den­ing; flow­ers; camp­ing; cook­ing; and shop­ping. She also was very inter­ested in herbal med­i­cines and home­o­pathic approaches to life. Iris led many women and children’s Bible stud­ies, and served the Lord for nine years as a mis­sion­ary in Rus­sia with her hus­band. Through her husband’s work assign­ments and mis­sion work, Iris trav­eled to 27 for­eign coun­tries. One of Iris’ favorite enjoy­ments was that of fol­low­ing her chil­dren and grandchildren’s involve­ment in sports and other activ­i­ties. She was a very devoted wife and mother who showed great mercy and com­pas­sion for people.

Iris is sur­vived by her mother, Mabel Dav­en­port of Delaware; hus­band of 28 years; three sons, Rick Spur­geon of Col­orado Springs, Colo., Duane Spur­geon of Hardy, Va., and Robert (Rochelle) Piatt of Saluda, Va.; four daugh­ters, Elaine (Ken) O’Neill of Dal­las, Ga., Karie Piatt (Tom) Bowser of Colum­bus, Denise (Arnold) Har­rel of Sun­bury and Sharie Piatt (Matthew) Mezydlo of West­er­ville; 19 grand­chil­dren and two great-grandchildren; and brother, Roger (Rose) Dav­en­port of Plain City.

She was pre­ceded in death by her father; two sons, Kelly Spur­geon in 1965 and Larry Spur­geon in 1975; and a sis­ter, Car­olyn Krause.

The fam­ily will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Tues­day, Oct. 23, at the Snyder-Rodman Funeral Cen­ter, 1510 W. William St. at Val­ley­side Drive, Delaware, and where funeral ser­vices will be held at 11 a.m. Wednes­day, Oct. 24. Bur­ial will fol­low in Oak Grove Cemetery.
