James R. Hill, M.D.
James R. Hill, M.D., 82 of Worthington and a former Ashley resident passed away Tuesday (Oct. 23, 2012) at Riverside Methodist Hospital following a brief illness.
He was born on Feb. 4, 1930, in Union City, Ind., and was a 1947 graduate of Central High School, Columbus. He received a bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology in 1951 from The Ohio State University.
Following graduation he worked in the chemistry laboratory of The Ohio State University Hospital until 1952 when he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was stationed in Denver; Tripoli, Libya; and London, England. Following his military service he graduated from the University of Colorado School of Medicine in 1959. He served a year internship at the Cincinnati General Hospital.
Following his residency at The Youngstown Hospital Association, he served as an associate pathologist and then as vice chairman until 1977. He continued his medical career with the Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus as associate pathologist, director of clinical pathology, and then as chairman of department from 1986–1992, retiring in 1993. He served as associate clinical professor of NEUCOM, Lordstown, from 1975–1977 and at OSU from 1978–1993. An active member of numerous medical associations, those holding special personal interest were: American Medical Association, Ohio State Medical Association, College of American Pathologists, American Society of Clinical Pathologists, and The American Association of Blood Banks, Transfusion Resource Committee of the College of American Pathologists, and as inspector for The American Association of Blood Banks from 1964 through 1990. Passionate in regards to his vocation as a physician, he was most proud of his work with the Blood Bank. He also felt privileged to serve on the boards of Youngstown Community Blood Center, Ohio Association of Blood Banks and Transfusion Resources Committee of the College of American Pathologists.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Youngstown and a longstanding member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Delaware. Since 1942, he also enjoyed his membership in the Ashley Grange.
He is survived by brother-in-law, Kenneth W. Cline of Waldo; nieces, Patricia M. Cline of Ashley, Audra E. (Rev. Brian) Smith of Sunbury and Doreen Hill-Seiler; nephews, Lenny (Lyndi) Cline of Waldo and Kevin F. Hill of Marion; grandnieces and nephews, Melissa D. (Andy) Stevens, Christine N. (Tristan) Knarr, Erin (Brian) Barkley and Jared Cline (Jennifer Russell); great-grandnieces, Allyson Stevens and Mahayla Barkley; and godson, Craig Malone of Twinsburg.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret C. (O’Dell) Boyer; stepfather, Warren L. Boyer; brother, Robert E. Hill; sister, Ruth E. Cline; and sister-in-law, Shirley Hill.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. with prayer services at 4 p.m. Friday at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, 75 W. William St., Delaware, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday with the Rev. Kevin Kavanagh and the Rev. Brian Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Ashley Cemetery, with military honors.
