James R. Hill, M.D.

James R. Hill, M.D., 82 of Wor­thing­ton and a for­mer Ash­ley res­i­dent passed away Tues­day (Oct. 23, 2012) at River­side Methodist Hos­pi­tal fol­low­ing a brief illness.

He was born on Feb. 4, 1930, in Union City, Ind., and was a 1947 grad­u­ate of Cen­tral High School, Colum­bus. He received a bachelor’s degree in Med­ical Tech­nol­ogy in 1951 from The Ohio State University.

Fol­low­ing grad­u­a­tion he worked in the chem­istry lab­o­ra­tory of The Ohio State Uni­ver­sity Hos­pi­tal until 1952 when he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force dur­ing the Korean Con­flict. He was sta­tioned in Den­ver; Tripoli, Libya; and Lon­don, Eng­land. Fol­low­ing his mil­i­tary ser­vice he grad­u­ated from the Uni­ver­sity of Col­orado School of Med­i­cine in 1959. He served a year intern­ship at the Cincin­nati Gen­eral Hospital.

Fol­low­ing his res­i­dency at The Youngstown Hos­pi­tal Asso­ci­a­tion, he served as an asso­ciate pathol­o­gist and then as vice chair­man until 1977. He con­tin­ued his med­ical career with the River­side Methodist Hos­pi­tal in Colum­bus as asso­ciate pathol­o­gist, direc­tor of clin­i­cal pathol­ogy, and then as chair­man of depart­ment from 1986–1992, retir­ing in 1993. He served as asso­ciate clin­i­cal pro­fes­sor of NEUCOM, Lord­stown, from 1975–1977 and at OSU from 1978–1993. An active mem­ber of numer­ous med­ical asso­ci­a­tions, those hold­ing spe­cial per­sonal inter­est were: Amer­i­can Med­ical Asso­ci­a­tion, Ohio State Med­ical Asso­ci­a­tion, Col­lege of Amer­i­can Pathol­o­gists, Amer­i­can Soci­ety of Clin­i­cal Pathol­o­gists, and The Amer­i­can Asso­ci­a­tion of Blood Banks, Trans­fu­sion Resource Com­mit­tee of the Col­lege of Amer­i­can Pathol­o­gists, and as inspec­tor for The Amer­i­can Asso­ci­a­tion of Blood Banks from 1964 through 1990. Pas­sion­ate in regards to his voca­tion as a physi­cian, he was most proud of his work with the Blood Bank. He also felt priv­i­leged to serve on the boards of Youngstown Com­mu­nity Blood Cen­ter, Ohio Asso­ci­a­tion of Blood Banks and Trans­fu­sion Resources Com­mit­tee of the Col­lege of Amer­i­can Pathologists.

He was a mem­ber of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Youngstown and a long­stand­ing mem­ber of St. Mary Catholic Church in Delaware. Since 1942, he also enjoyed his mem­ber­ship in the Ash­ley Grange.

He is sur­vived by brother-in-law, Ken­neth W. Cline of Waldo; nieces, Patri­cia M. Cline of Ash­ley, Audra E. (Rev. Brian) Smith of Sun­bury and Doreen Hill-Seiler; nephews, Lenny (Lyndi) Cline of Waldo and Kevin F. Hill of Mar­ion; grand­nieces and nephews, Melissa D. (Andy) Stevens, Chris­tine N. (Tris­tan) Knarr, Erin (Brian) Barkley and Jared Cline (Jen­nifer Rus­sell); great-grandnieces, Allyson Stevens and Mahayla Barkley; and god­son, Craig Mal­one of Twinsburg.

He was pre­ceded in death by his mother, Mar­garet C. (O’Dell) Boyer; step­fa­ther, War­ren L. Boyer; brother, Robert E. Hill; sis­ter, Ruth E. Cline; and sister-in-law, Shirley Hill.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. with prayer ser­vices at 4 p.m. Fri­day at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, 75 W. William St., Delaware, where ser­vices will be held at 10 a.m. Sat­ur­day with the Rev. Kevin Kavanagh and the Rev. Brian Smith offi­ci­at­ing. Bur­ial will fol­low in Ash­ley Ceme­tery, with mil­i­tary honors.
