Junior first baseman Tim Knezovich (Columbus/Briggs) went 4-for-5 and drove in three runs to power Ohio Wesleyan over John Carroll 5-3 in non-conference action on Monday in Port Charlotte, Fla.

The Bishops got on the scoreboard in the top of the third when junior outfielder Seth Frentsos (Delaware/Hayes) led off with a walk, took third on a single by junior outfielder James DiBiasio (Westlake), and scored on an infield out by sophomore second baseman Zach Bott (Dublin/Coffman), with DiBiasio moving to second on the play. Knezvovich followed with an RBI double to give the Bishops a 2-0 lead.

Knezovich singled in DiBiasio to extend the Bishop lead to 3-0 in the fifth.

The Blue Streaks closed to within 3-2 in the seventh on RBI singles by Joe Veltri and Aaron Miller.

Ohio Wesleyan got those runs back in the top of the ninth on RBI singles by senior outfielder Zach Frentsos (Delaware/Hayes) and Knezovich.

DiBiasio was 3-for-3 with two runs scored, and freshman third baseman Sean Vollenweider (Westerville/St. Francis DeSales) also had two hits.

Senior righthander Eric Livingston (Delaware/Hayes) pitched the first 5.2 innings, striking out three and walking two, to collect the win. Freshman righthander Andrew Parise (Columbus/St. Francis DeSales) worked the eighth and the ninth to collect his first collegiate save.

Jimmy Spagna was the starting and losing pitcher for John Carroll.

Marietta 9, Ohio Wesleyan 0

Marietta’s Tim Gasser blanked Ohio Wesleyan on three hits over the first seven innings as the eighth-ranked Pioneers snapped the Bishops’ three-game winning streak on Monday in Port Charlotte, Fla.

Marietta pushed across single runs in the first and third innings on a Britt Meador RBI single and a sacrifice fly by John Snyder, and the Pioneers increased the lead to 4-0 in the fourth as Casey Levens tripled in a run and scored on Alex Toth’s sacrifice fly.

Meador added a sacrifice fly during Marietta’s two-run sixth, and Snyder’s RBI double highlighted the Pioneers’ two-run eighth.

Freshman third baseman Sean Vollenweider (Westerville/St. Francis DeSales) had two of the Bishops’ three hits.

Sophomore righthander Brandon Sega (Columbus/Upper Arlington) was the starting and losing pitcher for Ohio Wesleyan.

SOFTBALL

Walsh, Anderson pace Bishops

Ohio Wesleyan 22, Newbury 0

Junior second baseman Abby Walsh (Millville, Mass./Blackstone-Millville) drove in four runs, senior shortstop Kaylie Titus (East Hampton, N.Y.) plated three more, and freshman outfielder Jen Anderson (Kettering/Fairmont) tied a school record as Ohio Wesleyan defeated Newbury 22-0 in the Bishops’ season opener on Monday in Cape Coral, Fla.

The Bishops erupted for 10 runs in the first inning, then added four more in the third and eight in the fourth.

Walsh went 3-for-3 with a double, a triple, and four RBI.

Titus finished with two hits in two at-bats with three RBI.

Anderson was 3-for-4 with three stolen bases and scored four runs, tying the school record accomplished four times previously.

Sophomore righthander Amanda Barker (Granville) blanked the Nighthawks through the first three innings and junior righthander Lauren McIntire (Marysville/Buckeye Valley) worked the fourth and the fifth frames to complete the shutout.

Neumann 7, Ohio Wesleyan 1

Neumann’s Crystal Perlman drove in five runs to lead the Knights over Ohio Wesleyan in non-conference play on Monday in Cape Coral, Fla.

Perlman plated a run to highlight Neumann’s three-run fourth inning, then launched a grand slam in the fifth to give the Knights a 7-1 lead.

Sophomore outfielder Lauren Elkins (Johnstown/Johnstown-Monroe) put the Bishops on the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the fifth.

Sophomore righthander Amanda Barker (Granville) worked three-plus innings before allowing the three runs in the fourth, sophomore righthander Erika Reese (Hilliard/Davidson) finished the fourth and pitched the fifth, and freshman righthander Dani Haley (Maumee/Anthony Wayne) made her collegiate debut with a scoreless sixth and seventh frames.

Amburgey, men’s relay team advance to indoor championships

Sophomore Emily Amburgey (Germantown/Preble Shawnee) and the men’s 1,600-meter relay team will represent Ohio Wesleyan at the NCAA Division III indoor track and field championships, to be hosted by Capital University in Columbus on Friday and Saturday.

Amburgey qualified for the national championship meet by clearing 5-6 during the Greater Columbus meet on Feb. 5. At last weekend’s North Coast Athletic Conference championship meet, Amburgey won All-NCAC honors by clearing 5-0.

The Ohio Wesleyan 1,600-meter relay team of senior Sean Patrick (Delaware/Hayes), sophomore Matt Martin (New Brighton, Pa./Riverside), sophomore Ethan Freet (London) and sophomore Silas Jolliff (Cardington/Cardington-Lincoln) qualified for the national championship meet with a school-record time of 3:14.90 at the Akron Zips Invitational on Feb. 18. The Bishops also won the NCAC title in the event.
