Roy J. Peterson
Roy J. Peterson, 65, of Marysville died Monday (Nov. 5, 2012 at Grady Memorial Hospital following a five-year battle with cancer.
A 1966 graduate of West Liberty Salem High School, he was an associate of Kalmbach Feeds in Upper Sandusky. A farmer for more than 35 years, he and his family formerly managed dairy farms in Urbana and the surrounding area. He will be most remembered for his commitment to his work and dedication to his family. Despite his illness in recent years, he served as a volunteer since November 2010 for Memorial Hospital of Union County’s mobile meals program. He accrued 266 hours volunteering for the hospital. He also enjoyed going on camping outings with his wife and family.
He was born Aug. 24, 1947, in Greene County to the late Roy J. and Elizabeth May McKinney Peterson and was also predeceased by two sisters, Mary Frances Huffman and Melvina Toner; three brothers-in-law, Chuck Reynolds, Carey Knief and Charles Toner; a sister-in-law, Nancy Parks; and his father– and mother-in-law, Walter and Helen Parks.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Shirley Jean Parks Peterson, whom he married July 3, 1966 at Wesley Chapel in West Liberty; four sons, David (Stacy) Peterson of Radnor, Scott Peterson of Marion, Mike (Sonya) Peterson of Benton, Tenn., and Nick (Barbi) Peterson of Apple Creek; 14 grandchildren, John, Cody, Joey, Mariah, Jay, Christen, Ashley, Austin, Gage, Isaac, Zack, Patrick, Brandon and Hope; four sisters, Delores Reynolds of Springboro, Betty Knief and Norma King, both of Urbana and Darlene Vanover of Jamestown; his brothers– and sisters-in-law, Al (Naydene) Parks of St. Paris and Bob Parks of Mechanicsburg and Judy (Ed) Strother of Marysville; many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends, including Teresa Laytart, Gina Peterson and her children, Josh, Kristin and Cheyenne.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Underwood Funeral Home in Marysville. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Calvary Baptist Church, 17376 Ohio 347. The Rev. Matt Zurowski will officiate and burial will be at Hopewell Cemetery on Hopewell Road in Leesburg Township.
