Special guests at library to showcase visual, musical creativity
The Delaware County District Library is hosting two special programs this coming week, and I cordially invite you and your family to both of them.
At 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Delaware Main Branch, 84 E. Winter St., children’s author and illustrator Denise Fleming will present a program on her books, including a take-away snowman craft and autographing session. This program is presented by the Friends of the Delaware County District Library with help from a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, awarded by the State Library of Ohio, and with support of the Goddard School.
Fleming is the author of several books, including the 1994 Caldecott winner In the Small, Small Pond. As an illustrator, Fleming creates most of her works of art by pouring colored paper through hand-cut stencils, a process called pulp painting.
At 6 p.m. Friday, the Delaware Main Library will close as usual, but one hour later, the doors will reopen for a special one-of-a-kind event, and the library will present “DCDL After Hours,” a concert featuring singer/songwriter Angela Easterling. Join us at 7 p.m. for casual, acoustic music woven with Angela’s personal stories of songwriting and upbringing. If you’re in the Main Library before then and want a sneak peek of what you’ll hear on the Friday, we have a listening station set up near the audiobooks.
I hope you plan on attending both of these programs. We are pleased to be able to offer them at no charge to the Delaware community. Enjoy!
Are lemons known for their carcinogen fighting abilities?
I did some research to find an answer for this, checking the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, The Health Sciences Institute, The Encyclopedia of Healing Foods and Foods that Harm, Foods that Heal. Lemons are an excellent source of vitamin C, and the peels contain limonene. Some research has indicated that limonene could potentially harbor anti-cancer properties that may perhaps prevent cancer from forming, slow the growth of existing cancer, or kill cancer cells; however, there has been no reputable scientific evidence that shows that lemons have carcinogen fighting abilities.
Did James Cagney and Humphrey Bogart ever appear in a film together?
According to The Secret Life of Humphrey Bogart, he and James Cagney appeared in three films together: “Angels with Dirty Faces” (1938), “The Oklahoma Kid” (1939) and “The Roaring Twenties” (1939). Cagney was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as Rocky Sullivan in “Angels with Dirty Faces,” but he did not win.
Who was Alexander Selkirk?
Alexander Selkirk (1676–1721) was a Scottish sailor who spent four years as a castaway after being marooned on an uninhabited island. An unruly youth, Selkirk joined buccaneering expeditions to the South Seas, including one commanded by William Dampier, which called in for provisions at the Juan Fernández Islands off Chile. Selkirk judged correctly that his craft, the Cinque Ports was unseaworthy, and he requested that he be left on the island. He was eventually rescued by Dampier some four years later, by which time he had become adept at hunting and making do with the resources available on the island. Selkirk’s story aroused great interest at home, and Daniel Defoe’s fictional character Robinson Crusoe was almost certainly based partly on him. Check World Book Encyclopedia for more information.
