The Rev. Clyde M. VanHoose, 78, of Mount Gilead, and formerly of Lewis Center, went home to be with the Lord Monday (Aug. 22, 2011) at his residence surrounded by his loving family.
He was born Feb. 20, 1933 in Johnson County, Ky., retired from Columbus Auto Parts and was the assistant pastor of the North Woodbury Freewill Baptist Church. He loved spending time outdoors in his garden and woodworking. He was a U.S. Army veteran (1953 to 1955) during the Korean Conflict.
He is survived by wife, Shirley (Knight) Saunders; children, “Butch” (Cathy) VanHoose of Sunbury, Wanda (Mike) Rucker of Cardington and Pauline (Gary) Messick of Mount Gilead; nephew whom he raised, Mike McVay of Danville; four grandchildren, Ed VanHoose, Amanda (Scott Annett) Messick, Whitney (Evan Morgan) VanHoose and Catelyn VanHoose; great-granddaughter, Arianna VanHoose and her mother, Rochelle Waggoner; stepchildren, Rob Saunders of Bidwell, Tony (Tracy) Saunders of Mount Gilead, Tim (Janie) Saunders of Dublin, Bill Saunders of Marengo, Ava (Jason) Hampton of Cardington and Chad Saunders of Marengo; nine stepgrandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren; and brother, Ralph “P. J.”
He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Christena (Howard) VanHoose; first wife, Margie (Holbrook) VanHoose in 2000; three brothers and three sisters, (Carmelita) VanHoose of Salyersville, Ky; three sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Ferguson Funeral Home, 202 E. Main St. (Ohio 161W) where the funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, with the Rev. Dorsel Messick and the Rev. Rob Ratcliff officiating. Interment will be at Big Darby Cemetery where the Union County Honor Guard will conduct full military honors.
