Wezlynn Davis has always been interested in the beauty industry, even as a child growing up in Delaware.

“We didn’t play house – we’d play spa,” Davis said. “My sister and I at 10, 11 years old would mix ingredients up and make skin care products, and pretend to sell it.”

Davis is the owner of The Beauty Lab, which opened earlier this month at 37 N. Sandusky St. She works with her sister, Rozie Constantinidis; and her mother, Sarah Speese. “It’s a family affair here,” Davis said.

The Beauty Lab offers services such as microdermabrasion and resurfacing on a three-treatment-per-month membership for six months or a year or an a la carte basis; and they sell custom-blended makeup.

“The whole business is about specialized, customized, affordable products for the soccer mom, the working mom, the college girl,” Davis said. “I say that to my clients all the time: You don’t have to be Les Wexner’s wife to come here.”

As a teen, Davis said she suffered from cystic acne. She learned that most mass-produced makeup is watered-down; and acne treatments are expensive.

“Through searching for remedies for my skin problems, I decided to become an esthetician,” Davis said. “I was open to a world of resources that led me to fall in love with not just the product, but also helping people feel their best.”

Davis said she and her sister had worked in a couple of beauty industry jobs before teaming up to rent “a little tiny room inside 1820 Collective around the corner on William Street. Over the course of a year and a half, we offered medical-grade services and we custom-blend cosmetics. People just loved it. I always wanted a shop, a storefront on this block, and this became available.”

“I feel especially blessed that we have this space to utilize and do what we’ve always wanted to do,” said Constantinidis. “It feels like we’ve always been here.”

All three women are licensed and professionally-trained skin care specialists.

“What we do are result-driven medical-grade skin treatments,” Davis said. “Everything we do here is customized. We have the ability to customize all of our treatments to the person and their specific concerns. We create cosmetics for the person from organic, raw vegan materials; from a foundation to an eye shadow to lip gloss and lipstick.”

Davis can mix the ingredients for an eye shadow, foundation, lip gloss or lipstick in whatever shade a customer needs in minutes.

“What we’ve experienced so far being on the main street is someone comes in and we tell them what we do, and they’re like, ‘I’ve been looking for this color,’” Davis said.

Most of the Beauty Lab’s clients are local, but also come from as far away as Newark and Akron, she said.

“Everybody said, ‘Don’t go to Delaware,’” Davis said. “They didn’t think there was a market for what we do here, but nobody here does what we do. I followed my instincts.”

The Beauty Lab’s three employees said they never planned to work together.

“This is something that came together,” Speese said. “It is our passion and gifts anyway as a family, so I think it was a natural progression that we all ended up with our licenses and working together in the same business.”

“My sister and I have been working on it since we were little. It’s just been an added bonus that Mom decided to join us,” Davis said.
