Orange and Buckeye Valley closed within a shot of each other during Tuesday’s North Union Invitational at Glenross, finishing second and third, respectively, in the event’s big school division.

Marysville won with a 311, but Orange grabbed runner-up honors with a 327 while BV smoothed out the top three with a 328.

The Pioneers, led by John McHale’s 77 and John Jones’ 79, used a strong back nine to climb toward the top of the leaderboard.

“We’re happy with what we did,” Orange coach Mark Corica said. “We were trying to shoot in the 320s, and we did just that despite not playing well early on. We shot a 169 on the front, but a 158 on the back, with each of our scorers lowering their scores over the course of the final nine holes.”

Other Pioneer contributors included Jack McClellan and Ray Albertini, who fired respective rounds of 83 and 88.

The Barons, meanwhile, were boosted by Clay Walter’s 76 and Adam Johnson’s 80. Other BV contributors included R.J. Oberle, who had an 85, and the duo of A.J. Veach and Nick Manning, who had 87s.

The Patriots were powered by Nate Flahive’s 82. Other contributors included Jordan Callicotte (83), Ryan Hall (83), Brett Beard (89) and Tommy Fortunato (90).

• Big Walnut competed in the New Albany Invitational Monday at Winding Hollow, closing 10th in the 18-team field with a combined total of 339.
