A veteran newspaper executive has been named as The Delaware Gazette’s new publisher.
Scott Koon, 59, took the helm of the Gazette this week. Koon has held a variety of senior-level newspaper positions. He was previously the publisher of the Daily American and Southern Illinois Trader as well as regional manager for 18 southern Illinois newspapers. Prior to that, he was a regional manager for American Publishing Co., publisher of the Webster City, Iowa Daily Freeman and publisher of the Emmetsburg Publishing Company in Iowa.
A 39-year career newspaperman, Koon got his start in newspapers in 1972 as an inserter in the mailroom on the night shift for a morning paper in Wheeling, W.Va. He eventually transferred into the circulation department, where he ran down motor routes and assisted the circulation manager with promotions and various office tasks. Koon worked his way up to ad director for Ogden Newspapers of the Elkins Inter-Mountain in Elkins, W.Va.
Koon served his country from 1971 to 1973 as a radioman in the United States Naval Reserve. He was an active member of the communities he worked in, serving on various chamber boards, economic development councils, Rotary and Lions clubs.
A recent transplant from Illinois along with his wife Beverly, Koon expects to also be active in the Delaware community.
“I’ve only been here four days but it was immediately obvious how wonderful this community and newspaper is. Everyone I have met so far has been welcoming and very helpful,” Koon said. I promise to, with the help of this dedicated and caring staff, do my best to make your Delaware Gazette both relevant and a newspaper you can be proud of.”
Outside of work, Koon is an award-winning dobro musician, enjoys scuba diving and is a pilot with his own plane.
