Orange’s Anna Sanford will be making her second straight trip to the OHSAA State Tennis Tournament, punching her ticket to the showcase with an impressive run through the district round of competition.
Sanford won the singles title at Friday and Saturday’s Division I District Championship at Hilliard Davidson, cruising past the competition with relative ease.
The sophomore won her opening match against Dublin Jerome’s Rhiannon James by a 6-0, 6-1 margin before advancing to the semifinals with a straight set, 6-0, 6-0 win over New Albany’s Jane Haffer in the second round.
Sanford then knocked off Dublin Coffman’s Ashwatha Thenappan 6-1, 6-1 in the semis before securing the title with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Dublin Jerome’s Emma Stein in the championship.
Each of the other local standouts competing in district competition saw their respective successful seasons come to an end.
In D-I action, Olentangy’s Megan Brdicka fell to Haffer by a 0-6, 3-6 margin in her opening match while Liberty’s Sydney Power lost to Stein 3-6, 4-6 in the second round after defeating New Albany’s Carol Vitellas 6-0, 6-2 in the first.
In the D-I doubles bracket, Orange’s Lindsay Spragg and Ayla Hood fell to Hilliard Bradley’s Ashley and Lauren Thai by scores of 3-6, 1-6.
Buckeye Valley’s Kelsey Baesman lost her opening match in the D-II singles competition at Columbus School for Girls, falling to DeSales’ My Linn Li, the top seed, 1-6, 0-6.
Finally, Village Academy’s Mallory McCorkle and Alex Cook fell to Annie Lavin and Meghana Vallabhaneni in their first-round showdown by a tight, 6-7, 3-6 margin.
