A temporary art gallery featuring the work of area artists opens today in downtown Delaware.

Longtime Sunbury resident Carolyn Heffelfinger is the artist behind the Wingspread Gallery, which will feature her nature-themed oil paintings, as well as the work of 13 other Central Ohio artists. The gallery is located at 29 N. Sandusky St., Delaware, between Beehive Books and Whit’s Frozen Custard.

Wingspread will only be open for two months. It will close its doors at the end of December.

Heffelfinger said she decided to open a temporary gallery because she loves to travel and doesn’t want to be tied down with a more permanent gallery. A Kent State University fine arts graduate, Heffelfinger thought a short-term gallery around the holidays would be a nice alternative.

Delaware art enthusiasts may be familiar with her work. Heffelfinger has exhibited at the Delaware Arts Festival and the Delaware Arts Castle and is known for her detailed paintings of wildlife and outdoor scenes.

“Many of my recent works have been inspired by our travel and exploring vistas unlike our Ohio landscapes,” Heffelfinger said. “It is always a challenge for a painter to change palettes according to the light of a different location. Colors of the west present a pastel palette, while Alaska is more subdued.”

For the past 15 years, Heffelfinger has brought along a watercolor journal and camera when she travels, recording the scenes, which later serves as reference for studio work. The journals (about seven) will be on display with her paintings at the gallery.

Art has been a longtime passion of Heffelfinger’s.

“Art was always something I was into,” she said. “As a little girl, my mom was always finding drawing paper for me.”

The Wingspread Gallery will feature a variety of paintings in different mediums, including acrylic, oil, watercolor and pastels, from professional artists — many of them are art teachers, Heffelfinger said. All articles are for sale and range in price from $100 to $1,800.

The list of artists who will have work exhibit at The Wingspread Galley includes: Maria White, Reynoldsburg; Angela Gage, Columbus; Mary Hollobaugh, Centerburg; Kevin Buckland, Lewis Center; Pertain Buckland, Lewis Center; John Daniels, Columbus; Gary Chaconas, Newark; Rich Clem, Gahanna; Bill Kavage, Sunbury; Jila Davoodi, Dublin; Michelle Morris, Powell; Karen LaValley, Westerville; and Michael Kaiser, Columbus.

The gallery will be open for Main Street Delaware’s First Friday events Nov. 4 and Dec. 2 in downtown Delaware. An open house and meet the artist event will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Nov. 19 at the gallery. Refreshments and demonstrations will be offered.

The Wingspread Gallery will be open regular business hours from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday at 29 N. Sandusky St., Delaware. Those with questions can contact Heffelfinger at 740-815-3925 or visit her website at wingspreadgallery.com.
