The Delaware County Board of Developmental Disabilities is scheduled to perform a 1940s-esque USO variety show at 7 p.m. Aug. 26 at the Delaware Christian Church. The show, “Sentimental Journey,” will feature 60 performers, the most ever, said show and communication director for DCBDD Sue Munday. “Sentimental Journey” harkens back to USO shows put on by the likes of Bob Hope, Jerry Lewis and the Andrew Sisters during the World War II era.
“The variety format really allows for people with disabilities to shine and display their individual talents,” said Munday.
This year’s show is uniquely connecting Delaware County to troops currently serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Focus on Abilities, which co-hosts fundraisers with DCBDD, has partnered with a chaplain in Afghanistan overseeing 750 American soldiers.
“We are asking those who attend the show to donate articles for soldier care packages which will be packaged by the Blue Star Families chapter of Central Ohio,” said Munday. Items suggested for donation include deodorant, toothpaste and other nonperishable goods.
Along with the soldier care packages, a card drive is set to take place. The show is dedicated to making sure each one of the 750 soldiers will receive a card thanking them for their service, Munday said. Also unique to this year’s variety show (which is in its third year) is, for the first time, the show will be filmed and distributed on DVD. The DVDs will be sent to the troops with the cards and care packages.
“They (the troops) will become familiar with our services and what we do in our community and then our cheer will be further spread to those serving our country. We love the fact that those serving our country can have a special gift from home. That’s what our whole theme is about,” Munday said.
Tickets prices for general admission are $10 and front row seats are $15. Seniors and veterans pay $5. Children 10 and younger are free. Tickets can be bought at focusonabilities.com or by calling 740-201-5810. Tickets will not be sold at the door.
