John S. Meyer, 88, of Delaware passed away early Sunday morning (May 20, 2012) at Cherith of Willow Brook, the day before his 89th birthday.
He was born on May 21, 1923, in Celina to the late Harry and Ocie (Fast) Meyer. A graduate of Celina High School in 1941, he was called to duty while a student at Ohio Wesleyan University. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, primarily in the China Burma India Theater. After the war, he earned his bachelor’s degree in education from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1949 and was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.
He was quite the basketball player in his younger years, playing for his school, college and armed forces teams. In 1950, he married Aldyth Barber from his home town of Celina, spending 62 years together. John worked 35 years in human relations for Ranco, where he retired. He also was a friend and confidant to the patrons of The Backstretch Bar, helping with its operation after the death of his son, Jeff Meyer in 1999. An avid golfer, he participated in numerous area golf leagues and enjoyed gardening. He was also a member of the St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. He will be remembered for his friendly nature and warm smile.
In addition to his wife, Aldyth (Barb), he is also survived by daughters, Judith Clancy of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Cynthia (Rick) Schlichting of New Providence, N.J., daughter-in-law, Joanne Meyer of Delaware; grandchildren, Kyle Meyer, Dr. Beth (Kevin) Bockhold, Kate (Nate) Johns, Meg Schlichting, Corine (Brendan) Graber and Joanne Clancy; and loyal friend, Matt Smith.
In addition to his son Jeff, he was also preceded in death by his brother, Lee Meyer, who was lost in the South Pacific during World War II.
Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, 75 W. William St., Delaware, where services will follow at 5 p.m. with the Rev. Ward Cornett III officiating. A second service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Lehman-Hogenkamp-Dzendzel Funeral Home, 901 Myers Road, Celina, with the Rev. Douglas Meyer officiating. Burial will follow in the North Grove Cemetery in Celina with military honors provided by the Mercer County Veterans Assoc.
