Susanna Strickland Bellocq died peacefully at her home Sunday afternoon (Nov. 27, 2011).
She was born in Escanaba, Mich., the daughter of Charles and Elizabeth Strickland. She obtained a B.A. and a M.A. degree from Michigan State University and a PhD from the University of Illinois. Early on in her academic career she developed a life-long passion for all things French. She toured Europe, lifeguarded on the French Atlantic coast and one summer even at the Delaware Salvation Army Summer Camp. For 40 years she incarnated French at Ohio Wesleyan instilling her passion for French and French literature to countless Ohio Wesleyan students.
She is survived by her beloved daughters, Caroline and Helen; husband, Jean-Michel; sister, Mary and brother-in-law, Kirby Holmes; nieces and nephews, Amy Strickland, Mary Ellen Lynn, Kerry Bremmer, Harold (Charlie) Holmes and Tracy VanWyhe; she is also survived by her French family, Francois, Catherine, Julien and Anne-Sophie, Jacqueline, Marc, Martin and Catherine. She loved life and brought sunshine to the lives of those who knew her. She was kind, generous, witty and courageous. Lastly, she is survived by her last class of students whom she would have loved to continue nurturing, her many Delaware friends, French friends and friends throughout the world.
Visitation will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, at Robinson Funeral Home. A separate service and reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, at Asbury Methodist Church. Her burial will take place in Biarritz, France.
