The Olentangy High School varsity basketball teams have won the state championship, academically speaking.

The Ohio High School Coaches Association awards academic certificates to juniors, a Silver Scholarship Certificate, and seniors, a Gold Scholarship Certificate, who carry above a 3.2 accumulative grade point average and have exemplified the highest type of citizenship and sportsmanship. Olentangy High School’s girls and boys basketball teams had a combined 24 certificate winners, the most in the state of Ohio, all divisions combined.

“It’s a great honor,” Olentangy girls basketball coach John Feasel said. “It’s a tribute to our school system … that’s really what it is. It’s good kids, good parents and good teachers that make things like this happen.”

The Olentangy Liberty High School varsity girls and boys basketball teams were also recognized for academic achievement. Liberty had a combined 20 certificate winners, second most in the state, all divisions combined.

Combined with their academic achievements, the Olentangy girls basketball team and the Olentangy Liberty boys basketball team both were ranked for the first time in their schools’ history in the Associated Press state basketball rankings.
