Sue Koloff’s husband told her she was wasting her time, that the odds of winning The Delaware Gazette and Sunbury News’ $10,000 Publisher’s Giveway were slim to none. As it turned out, he was wrong. And on this occasion, he’s fine with that.
Koloff is the winner of the newspaper’s first-ever $10,000 Publisher’s Giveway. Her name was the last of 43 finalists to be drawn during a reception held Tuesday at the Delaware County Center for Older Adults facility on Cheshire Road.
“My husband made fun of me for filling out the entry forms,” said Koloff, who entered the contest after reading about it in the Gazette. She dutifully filled out the forms at various sponsoring businesses throughout the county for four consecutive weeks to ensure she was complying with the contest rules.
Although he had his doubts, husband Kevin Koloff drove her to the different businesses to make sure her entries were turned in.
“I didn’t think she had a chance,” he said.
But luck was with the Koloff’s Tuesday. The 65-year-old child care provider and North Liberty Street resident dropped her jaw in shock as she was announced the winner by Donna Meyer, associate director of communications for the Council for Older Adults, a Publisher’s Giveaway sponsor.
Sue Koloff plans to spend the money installing hardwood floor in her home, something she’s wanted to do for a long time, she said. The rest of the winnings will go toward paying of her Christmas shopping bills, she said.
“I joked about getting a new floor, but I didn’t think I’d actually win. It just never entered my mind,” she said.
Koloff was among two other finalists, Erna Pagels and Norma Rease, who briefly waited in front of the room of 43 semi-finalists as their names were being pulled from a wire basket. Pagels and Rease congratulated Koloff as the audience applauded the results.
Gazette publisher Gary Merrell thanked each of the participants and business sponsors for making the contest a success. Merrell asked the crowd whether they would like to see the Gazette and Sunbury News make the contest a reoccurring event.
The question was answered by a round of applause from the crowd, including from a wide-grinned Sue Koloff.
