Jobless rate hits four-year low

While Powell resident satisfaction remains high, traffic continues to be the biggest problem facing the city, according to the results of a community survey.

City council heard the results of the 2012 Powell Community Survey this week. About 400 registered Powell voters were randomly selected and called by an independent public opinion research company in early May to conduct the survey. The polling, which was also conducted in 2008 and 2010, provides a representative sample of how all Powell residents feel about issues.

While most residents are satisfied with the city’s efforts to maintain the community’s streets and roads, revitalize downtown and control residential growth, traffic continues to be a concern for many.

The 2012 survey found that residents are pleased with most aspects of life in Powell, similar to what the last survey showed:

- Residents overwhelmingly believe Powell is headed in the right direction. Eighty-eight percent of people said they feel this is true, which is up 9 percent from the previous survey.

- The city’s small-town atmosphere continues to be Powell’s greatest asset, meaning the city is safe, family-oriented, pedestrian friendly and not overly developed.

- Overall resident satisfaction with city services remains high. Residents are most pleased with Powell’s safety forces, as well as maintenance of streets and roads and the city’s efforts to revitalize downtown.

- More than half the residents (54 percent) consider Powell an exceptional place to live. Almost everyone else (44 percent considers the city better than average.

The 2012 survey showed Powell residents are less satisfied with a few aspects about the community:

- Traffic continues to be the top complaint about Powell with 55 percent being dissatisfied. Less than half the community is satisfied with efforts to manage local traffic. Thirty-seven percent are somewhat satisfied. Eight percent is very satisfied.

- More than seven out of 10 residents are satisfied with city council, a figure that has risen slowly but steadily since 2008.

More than 8 out of 10 residents feel that officials keep them well-informed about important city issues, but about seven out of 10 feel that city officials listen to the concerns of residents.

The poll, conducted by Columbus-based Saperstein Associates, has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.9 percentage points.
